Chicken or the egg?

Post by world class male »

if/when the new deal gets voted in, how will the ratio to ft/pt staff be calculated?
I've heard it will be 75/25, not certain of that, but will it be national or regional?

seniority will definitely come first for been offered a f/t contract, that was confirmed by my union rep.
but how will the new term work out if the agreed ft/pt ratio has already been reached?
the words "appropriate" & "planned" sink that clause straight away
The level of part time Employees’ contracted hours will be
reviewed by the Company and the CWU locally on a six
monthly basis. Where appropriate, increased contracted
hours will be offered to reflect the hours actually worked and
planned.
I obviously can only base this on my own office where most current f/t just do 39, no more
quite a few 30+ do some overtime + day off to take them to 39 at least
and the more senior 30+ refuse any overtime yet would take being made up to 39
and the 20+ do a fair bit to take them to mid 30
surely the quote in the agreement will eventually put those p/t to their actual average hours?
why do i think there's room for turning this clause down when it suits, as it does nothing but cost money for RM for holiday and sick pay

I'm not saying it is the case with all part timers, but some (and I know of at a least 1 who is senior to the other p/t) who wont do overtime. They used to do a lot but got to a point where they thought 'sod it - if they need me here then they can increase my contract'.

If no part time staff did any overtime the company would fall apart (our office certainly would) but the sad reality is that the p/t staff need the money and the company get away with paying them full time hours the weeks they work overtime and only part time hours when on holiday/sick (thus making a saving).

I'd settle for a permanent contract right now! I'll be banging on the Dom's door once i've gotten 2 years service in, thats for sure. As per my recent post, there is a rumour of increasing part timers hours to bring us more in line with full timers finishing times and to help finish prep and bundle up ie from 24 to 29 hours. I won't hold my breath though!

so far a "no" vote for me, the pay rise is acceptable by todays standards, but the uncertainty of a "deserved" full time contract stated in the agreement despite my actual hours worked over the years and confirmed by my union rep that i still probably wont get a f/t contract.
and i can say that i will probably cancel my union subs, nealy £200 per year

mostly true in our office too, the oldest serving batch of p/t'ers have had the crap beaten out of them, so on the flip side they deserve the f/t offer first,
the f/t offer will be like the shares offer, one big cock up

It's never been any different and never will be. I started in 1997 and didn't get a permanent FT contract until 2004. Some in my office are approaching 10yrs service, one has 13 years and no FT contract despite working FT every week.

So don't think you're a special case or anything is going to change cos it isn't, FT contracts have never been easy to get in most offices, not unless you put the years in.

All our part-timers were made up to full-time last year.
I don't know why or what brought about this sudden change of mind after several years for some being on P/T contracts.
But it does show that it can and does happen!

We are now 100% full-time (apart from afternoon collections staff). :thumbup

It could be a combination that you folks must have been super efficient - working way beyond 100BSI and possibly have exhausted all the budgetary savings you could...

So during your revision, if accurate data was used and the part-timers were not working for nothing but being paid lots of OT; it will be so obvious that they have to increase your hours. Moreover, they probably could not create any more duties...

So well done, you all deserve it! What is the size of your office? (small?)

As for some offices that purported be working at about 60 or 70BSI, you will hope that RM will do something about them. The idea that some Senior or Divisional Reps can manager the improvement or efficiency required rather than the Work or RM sounds a bit corrupt to me - but that is another issue...

Reg the share issues don't you agree that after the 3 year period of when we can cash in shares that they know that many of the staff will have had enough of rm and left by then?

Some will leave but it all depends on what the economy is doing at the time and at what stage of life these leavers will be at.

Delivery is hard but it is well paid considering but I must admit I will like to think that if I get to the 3 years mark, I will be selling my shares immediately and leaving...

Agree with u totally Chris , shares come I'll be off I think . The b & h in the job and longer walks are a killer now , it's all profit driven with no regards to staff now.
