A stop to early starters

Never thought I would see this day! The DOM (who is normally an a***hole) gathered us all together yesterday morning and informed us that effective immediately no-one would be allowed to come in early to throw their own sequenced mail in. If they wanted to come in before their official start time they were welcome to sort letters on the IPS or packets in the bullring. A few sorry souls still came in early this morning and were amazed to find the DOM in already (this is unheard of!!!) They were told if they went on their own frames they would be taken down the conduct code. Hopefully this continues and we'll get a true reflection of where we are post revision. Is this just us or are others having a similar thing happening?

Nearly as mind boggling as not wanting a meal break.

To be fair , we're an office with about 20 walks and its normally just the same 3 that come in early but with it being xmas there's about another 4 or 5 that have been wanting to get a head start so they can pick their kids up on time.

That's what you call dumping the rep in the deep and smelly stuff.
While I can't condone starting early and applaud his intentions I wouldn't accept a member being conducted for something like that.

I'm not saying it isn't or they can't.
Just that there is enough conducting going on in offices without dragging this into it.
I suspect it would need some kind of official policy behind it for it to really stick,the conduct code should apply equally whether you're in Cambuslang or North London.

Perhaps rather than using the conduct code, the DOM should consider counselling.
So if they come in 20 minutes early, they get 25 minutes counselling thus rendering the whole coming in early - pointless.

On a serious note, there is a method in his actions, not the conduct code as I'm not entirely sure how that would gel with his SOM. If he feels that the early starters are skewing his manpower figures he may have decided that he'd rather pay overtime causing a glitch whilst asking for more staff to cover the expensive shortfall.

I'm long in the tooth now but I did use a similar method in a previous job and it worked until privatisation reared its ugly head. The blokes were paid a fixed bonus for reaching a certain target but received nothing for going beyond that target and so I made sure that although it was more than possible they did not go beyond that target, ensuring that the overall task could not be completed without overtime OR additional manpower and vehicles.

Shouldnt be cutting of the packets, its streaming mail, and shouldnt be happening, and if your DOM is telling you to stream one particular type of mail (except specials) over another he could get into trouble

Packet drivers should be taking them, for various reasons though they're not always going the same day.

Starting 15 mins early a day, 5 days a week, 46 weeks a year (if you have 6 week holiday) is over 57 hours a year which is £500 out of your pocket to get shafted with more work really aint for me! We got 1 guy who wouldnt give a door a bang but comes in early every day and gives Royal Mail over £500 a year for nothing! How many of these early starters would put £500 in their hand and burn it!!??
