2yr serious issued

Post by Postaltony »

I recently was issued a 2yr serious for failing to safeguard the mail.
The issue was I left for delivery and forgot a SD and a bundle of mail.
I was alerted by line manager and I returned to office and collected the items and delivered with no failures.

I checked the conduct code and it states that isolated incidents should be dealt with by counselling as genuine mistakes do happen.

I had a clear record after 17yrs service and it was an isolated incident.

After the warning was issued I appealed using the info from the conduct code.
The manager dealing with the appeal agreed that it was isolated and agreed with my clear record.

However he upheld the warning.

In my opinion they ignored the conduct code and issue regardless of what record you have clear or not.

Any useful opinions out there?

Very harsh. After I started about 2 months in I was bagging up and someone came past with a york and pushed a bag under the frame, we went out and forgot it. We spotted it an hour later and my colleague rang the manager and asked if it was there, he checked and said it was and he went back and retrieved it, just got called a cock for doing it. No action. Another newb in our office got put on with a guy who had never done the round and their day went colossally wrong, and they failed on a few specials before 1PM in fact way after 1PM. and they both got called in and had words of advice, the newb being told the importance of SD items and the old-timer for not taking responsibility and leaving his walk to make sure they were delivered in time. So, I think the manager is being harsh, especially as you completed according to the rules and only inconvenienced yourself in effect. I think the cases I mention may have been lenient as they involved probationers whereas your manager is clearly using the ethos "You should know better" but following his actions half the delivery staff would have conducts overhanging them. Common-sense has not prevailed here.

I got a two year serious for calling a fellow postie a C you next Tuesday in an arguement, was worth it though.

I have also forgot to take specials out and received a phone call off the PHG so I returned to the office and delivered them in time. Nothing else was said so your dom is a little bit heavy handed to say the least.

if you had failed to deliver them then fair enough that you should receive a B0llocking for it, but not a two year serious.

Seems that no matter what the issue is warnings are issued.
The DOM did not issue on this occasion, just a line manager. Who I must add always issues and is an arse hole.

Now grievance has been heard I'm told there is no other course of action I can take. Ridiculous since the grievance manger contradicted himself in his decision making.

Basically they want as many out the door the best way they can which is heavy handed aggressive management.

How can you have failed to SAFEGUARD the mail when you hadn,t even taken it out of the depot? That must mean all mail inside a depot is not safeguarded. :arrrghhh :arrrghhh

Line managers have the authority to issue serious warnings of up to 2 years.
A 2 year serious warning is not to be confused with a 2 year suspended dismissal which is outside the remit of most line managers depending on grade.
No they can't, a lino is just acting.
A line manager and an acting line manager are two different things although an acting manager has the same authority level as the grade he/she is acting for.
Having said that acting line managers don't do conduct cases in our office, they are still CWU grades and that would in my mind be a conflict of interest.
