Pedometers count every movement, even moving from foot to foot on the doorstep count's as a step, as does bending down to a low letter box.

I used one on my old phone for a couple of days and it clocked 18000+ steps even though around 2000 of those were steps upto houses and back down again, so could'nt be counted a true steps for speed etc.

Walk at 7mph!! no chance check your figures,taking into account stopping to open gates,sort mail and actually post it I doubt very much you are averaging 3mph.As a young crow I couldn't tab at 7mph.

I use Endomondo , it's more a GPS tracker for cyclists but gives you good speed , time and duration breakdown .

I used this app last year on the few different walks, and they all seem to come in at about 6 miles in distance.

Pedometers are crap.

Go to a running track and run a mile. 4 x 400m.
See how fast you can do it.
If you think you can WALK at 7mph, that means you can walk each of those 400m in 105 seconds.
WALK 100m in 26.25 seconds.
A top sprinter can run it in 10 seconds. Your walking speed is only 3x slower than a flat out top sprinter?

The world record for the 50km (approx 31 miles) walking roadrace is 3hr 34.14.
I will leave you to do the maths for his average walking speed.

A guy near me gave me the idea a while ago and I never followed up on it, his duty was 11 miles in total. I tried it last week from the moment I left my house until I returned home over 6 hours later and I'd done 11 miles and burnt off over 1400 calories.
