Any tips to speed up my delivering?

I always seem to be 1-5 minutes behind my work partners whether they are younger,older,slimmer or fatter. Im tall, I have long legs and I reckon I walk quick and I try and race round now so at least no one is waiting back at the van so im guessing it cant just be down to walking fast,maybe its actually the delivering. I tend to get my letters bundled up as im walking up the drive whilst looking at which house is next. I use 2 hands,one to open the letterbox and one to push them through. If its a busy parcel day this is where I slow down a bit. I come to my reversed letter so I know theres a parcel but I get frustrated when I cant find it sometimes as its probably the small one thats dropped to the bottom of the parcel loop bag which is jammed packed to the brim full of parcels,so im unloading them on the path and then when ive found the parcel I need I spend another minute packing them all back up.lol. Time ive knocked on the door,realised their not in,wrote out a card and endorsed the parcel 5 minutes have gone by.
How do I speed this heavy parcel day up?

Don't worry about it Hew. Management are trying to tell us that parcels don't take any longer to deliver than letters....we all know that's bollocks. You've just illustrated it.

This job is not about rushing around trying to fit all the work into your delivery time. It's up to you. If you want the OT tell them you're happy to do it...if they pay you! If you don't want the OT tell them so and say you're going to cut-off and finish on your time. On busy days, with loads of packets/parcels you're bound to be running late. Try not to let it stress you and pass the buck to the Manager. Be aware he may well try to bully you into doing it for no OT with some management bullshit about "Traffic Figures", stay strong and just tell him YOU'RE NOT WORKING FOR FREE

Hew, try using a Lwt trolley. Packet Bag on one side and letters bag on the other. The trolley may slow you down, but dont worry as you will find the job easier and less stressful.

I'm pretty sure this is what royal mail envisaged when they dreamt up Park and loop. Nobody wants to be called slow so they race around, racing against each other. Get called slow and it gets around the office and nobody wants to work with you, the person who is with you secretly then resents you. So people naturally panic and try and go even faster.

That's office politics.

If you are doing your job correctly, f**k them. You'll eventually get faster but doing the job correctly is more important. If they are constantly faster you might find they are cutting corners.

Tips? Try and put the packets in order as much as you can. Some people number their packets on the top so they can see it in a glance. Others place packets in separate compartments of the burst bag corresponding to a street.

Some place a p739 instead of turning a letter so it's there ready if you notice left a packet.

How do I speed this heavy parcel day up?

Put the parcels in your bag in order, anything small put it in the front pocket. Being organised is far more important than racing around, which you shouldn't need to do. I don't run around but I beat most people on loops because I'm very organised, I can't work with things in a muddle.

If you have too many packets in a bag then take one or two of the bigger ones out, or a couple that are close together and do them in the van, either as you are driving between loops or when you've finished.

in the office:
-stick to prepping your job as much as poss, get it up to date before going on sorting and keep an eye on other staff who keep sneaking back to their frames to throw off
-get your keys early before there's a queue
-find a york/trays/bands early before they become scarce when everyone else ties up
-do a final check before tying up, nothing worse than getting a pile of mis-sorts when you're about to leave
-put a blank docket card in where you have packets, you wont miss any packets then and you wont run out of docket cards
-be as organised as possible tying up as a few extra minutes here can save a lot of minutes looking for things in the van later
-take a minute or two loading parcels in order so you don't waste time out there
-don't band up every individual call as it takes forever, just band up calls that have a lot of mail, and band several calls together in sections

on delivery:
-doorstep parcels, especially if it's 'under cover and out of sight'
-try to bring back as little as possible, takes more time writing dockets and putting stickers on when you get back
-put through recordeds if they fit, customer will appreciate it
-start writing dockets for big recordeds/specials straight away don't wait to knock twice
-walk across grass unless customer tells you off
-if using a trolley don't move it every call, do as much as you can with it in sight eg a loop with grass cutting etc
-don't chat to customers for long, start to walk away and say 'better get on' as they can hold you up for several minutes
-always have your pda with you as you never know when a recorded or tracked might appear!
-keep specials separate from all other mail at all times, easy to lose one if you're not careful
-any calls that take ages (down a longtrack, long walk etc) be selective with, if it's just advertising it can wait til the next day
-put these calls back on the sorting frame if theres loads of other letters there when you get back or just endorse the letter writing 'no access' or 'dog out' on a bit of paper on top of it
-also no problem putting the odd thing back in a post box, it will only come back through the system again
