Hi. Just finished my 6 weeks training and now ive gone from 3 long days to 5 short days as a leave reserve. There are only 6 down as a leave reserve with over 40 staff,a lot not having years of service.
Is this the normal procedure for a newbie on a 25hr contract post revision? Do we all go to leave reserve after training now? Ive heard stories that people are leave reserves for years and I would be a bit miffed if another newbie comes in and doesnt have to do this after their training?

Being a leave reserve is actually not so bad as you will get a fair example of walks with some being more senior duties.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

It's called seniority. It's normal for a newbie to be 'spare' or a reserve for a while, then a floater, then after a few years, get your own duty.chicsmith wrote: Is this the normal procedure for a newbie on a 25hr contract post revision?
However, if you had six weeks training, you obviously work in a very strange office, so anything could happen.

Re: Newbie questions.
Six weeks training is probably given six weeks doing the same round. None of this different round everyday nonsense.

Re: Newbie questions.
I was spare/reserve for about 4 years, covering any round that needed covering, sick, holiday etc. Then I got given a duty which was covering 5 duties days off, so I did Duty 1 one day, Duty 2 the next etc. This meant I knew what I was doing before going in every day. I was moved around of course, depending on which manager was struggling to manager holiday and sick cover.llcoolh wrote: Isn't it spare or reserve its same as floater?? After the revision, I applied and got my own walk, however I still get moved around depending on who is sick or on holiday, just not as much as I used to.

Re: Newbie questions.
Sorry when I meant training I mean given one round for 6 weeks.
We have just gone into revision and some of the ones that have been there a while have now got their own duty at the.expense of losing a few hrs per week. How do these positions come by? Do they get advertised or wait til ones leaves/retired? Im fully expecting to be a reserve for a long while yet,was just wondering if you do get asked personally or are they advertised?

Should be advertised, but some units are a little lax - which is when you need a good Union presence not just a rep.
