Daily Variable Delivery spans

Has anyone come across variable delivery spans across the week? ie Mon/ Tue/ Sat having shorter outdoor delivery spans than those on a Wed/ Thurs/ Fri. I know longs and short was always based on indoor traffic variables this is the first time the outdoor element has been suggested to me to develop longer and shorter total duty spans. If it is legitimate do we go by call rate counts developed by staff and include D2D daily?

We do 'longs & shorts' on the days you have mentioned. I normally get to my 1st drop on average 30 mins earlier on the short days than on the longer days.
Also the actual time it takes to do the delivery is quicker on these days by 20-30 mins.

Sounds like a ballache that will go catastrophically wrong on more occasions than it will go right.
So...It will probably be rolled out nationally.

Call rates vary from duty to duty,day by day,month by month as does D2D so good luck with that.

On my walk there can be as much as 2 hours difference in outdoor between a Tuesday and a Thursday.


Longs and shorts are the only sensible way to do it.

When you look at the % of mail given for mon to sat you will find that apart from Tuesday (which has been low for all the years I have known) the percentages are not far from being pretty much the same. If you give smaller span (less time to deliver in other words) on a Monday and Saturday you will find out a lot of duties cant complete on time. The only reason Saturday is given less time is that as we are our own worst enemies, we come in early, don't take a break, don't do any d2d's and cut every corner imaginable to complete early on a Saturday.

Thanks for the above comments, from what I gather there is supposed to be a CWU LTB from Oct 2012 that deals with this issue. However ive not found it has anyone else seen it?

If you work different hours each day what happens if your day off is a Tuesday and someonelses day off is a Thursday surely its a shorter week for one and longer for the other

I am told that it balances out over a 5 week period. Yet to see this in practice and I do have concerns over the reserves, who do not get a rotating res tday.

I worked as a reserve under this system for 6 years. I went and checked once all my days off over the previous year and found that I got significantly more long days off. Probably because I was never given a Monday or Saturday off leaving only one short day.
