Dirty van.

My friend is just off the phone.... His van, which he always kept spotless was today taken off him to be given to a rural driver in another office. And in return he got the banged up piece of crap the rural driver had run into the ground for years. Also the van is absolutely stinking.

Has he got grounds for refusal to use this as inadequate tools for the job???

It could be deemed unsafe due to the lack of care given to the van, also the mess inside could constitute a hazard in a accident when unsecured objects fly around the cab, the van should have been checked over before acceptance and made safe before handed over otherwise the DOM would be taking on the liability if the van is defective.

Happens all the time, clean a rural skip inside and out and next day you lose it to another rural van. The exchange van is normally filthy but if you want to complete your round you have to accept it. Gives you something to moan about and gets the blood pressure up, the working day would not be complete without some form of stress !!!!!!!

I have never known a van to be clean, other than within a fortnight of delivery.

I would refuse on H&S grounds.
And as an aside, in my area, we have to make sure vans going to MTW are clean, or else they refuse to work on them and send them back.

Clean it back to as best as you can and claim the overtime do this every time they give you a filthy van and they will soon stop , we keep our oun vans now no swapping so that works in our office , they are easy to keep clean inside its the outside that's filthy but who cares about outside

There was a time (long long ago) when we had a couple of guys in the afternoon on van cleaning OT with a soapy brush and power washer. We took some pride in our jobs back then.

I don't think it's got anything to do with not having pride in jobs now, it is because they have cut all the time out and don't allow us the opportunity to wash/vacuum the vans now, I'd happily do it for my benefit and that of my colleagues. In fact, one of the lads did start to clean his van the other day, and the manager asked him what the hell he thought he was doing.
