Used a bag on the shoulder for part of my P/L walk and one house had 2 cars parked leaving about a foot gap to get through.
I squeezed through, delivered the mail but after squeezing past the cars again my strap got caught on the wing mirror and snapped it off.
Would you have :-
1/ just walked away, hoping nobody saw
2/ gone back and knocked on the door
3/ phoned your DOM and told him what happened and see if anyone complains

if they were inconsiderably parked on the pavement, they deserve all they get, including the scratches caused by pushchairs and wheechairs, or lwts…

I think you did the right, responsible thing. Unfortunately, this can often bite you in the arse.
I personally would have phoned the DOM first, and then knocked on the door, just to avoid the possibility that, if you knock first, you may find upon your return you're in trouble even though you've acted responsibly. You may find that RM will foot the bill, or may argue the case that they fail to leave enough room.
There is also the point that, had you done it, and known you have as you did, and then walked away, you may have been seen by any number of witnesses, or even been caught on CCTV.
And there is another thread on here about a van hitting a wall and it going unreported, due to forgetting, and the postie is in trouble, though hopefully only minor.
I think, if a complaint comes in, and you're so inclined, you offer to pay for the damage, it should end there.
If you hadn't owned up, and weren't seen at all, someone else may have ended up being blamed.
You did the right thing.

I would have to be 100% sure nobody saw me to try 1 and you're never 100% sure.
Number 2 would depend on how big and prone to violence the customer was.
I think number 3 was the smart move.

I have a delivery point that does that quite a lot, so I just endorse the mail " N/D " and return it to the DO.

I then just show the DIM and he endorses it as well, job done.

Not always - mine round is being risk assessed and they feeling is that it will be bag on shoulder for most of it because of terrain.

It is illegal to park any part of a motor vehicle on the pavement unless an area has been designated for it.I would have taken a picture of the vehicle showing the number plate with my phone,then told my DOM,also would have rang plod to see what the position is regarding this.

Sorry, this is wrong. It is NOT illegal to park on a pavement unless you are in London or, strangely enough, Exeter (due to a local act of parliament).

You are right,and I was wrong but if there isn't enough room to get past on the pavement without catching the mirrors surely it would be classed as obstructing the pavement
