Long and Shorts
In our office we have a "successful" revision due to people not taking tea-break and cutting corners.Union rep has spoken to staff but they ignore advice.
Now we have been told we need to go to long and short days or we will be splitting duties. We are due to vote on options next week.
Problem 1 is part time staff are not affected at all by l&s but will need to split duties. So when they vote only one option affects them.
Problem 2 if we go l&s there will be weeks we work 39 hours 15 minutes and others 38hr 45mins.this will even out over 6 week period we are told.
I don't see how they can ask people to work 39hrs 15 mins if we are only contracted for 39hrs.Also if your holidays fall on all shorter weeks you will work 1hour 30 minutes extra for nothing based on a 6 week holiday year.
Union and management trying to push for long and shorts which also means 3 different starting times a week for people on 6 day weeks.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Long and Shorts
We do longs and shorts the following way-
Mon-06.15 - 13.33
Tue-06.15 - 13.33
Wed-06.15 - 14.33
Thu-06.15 - 14.33
Fri-06.15 - 14.33
Sat-06.15 - 13.33 = 39 hours
It works quite well on the whole,we are mainly a rural office with a few van share duties. No part timers though.

Re: Long and Shorts
It clearly states in the 2010 Business Transformation agreement that any staff member can retain their current hours if they wish, though RM seem to be ignoring the agreement when inconvenient.
At the end of the day, you are contracted to work 39 hours a week over 5 days, and you cannot be forced to work over, irrelevant of the result of the vote, and separate to any point that it evens out over time. If you don't want to do it, you can refuse, but you must be prepared for the harassment that will inevitably follow. The manager will no doubt tell you that you have no choice but to comply, but if you feel strongly enough about it, stand up for yourself and stick to your guns. It would be better if you're not the only one doing this, perhaps discreet enquiries to your colleagues on this issue.
When we had the preference exercise in our office, the managers pushed for 52 hour weeks, 3 weeks on and one off, I pointed out I was 39 hours etc., and the DOM said if that's the result it's tough, there were quite a lot of us that refused so he backed down very quickly. Good luck with it.

Re: Long and Shorts
thanks for comments
there is a few of us who are against working more than our 39hrs to suit the business.they do nothing in our favour so why do we roll over everytime they suggest an idea.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It is against the law to work more than 4.15 hours without a toilet reliefeastie wrote:make sure you have your full 40 minute break , dont come in early and do the job properly .clashcityrocker wrote:How do you work to your time if there isn't enough work to do?eastie wrote:Work to your time on Mon and Tues thats what I do and then its only the early starters that will get asked to starburst

Re: Long and Shorts
I was in work at 5.45 this morning and had my first leak at 11.15 - how long do you think I'll get - do you think there'll be some leniency because I don't have a watch?milscott wrote:It is against the law to work more than 4.15 hours without a toilet reliefeastie wrote:make sure you have your full 40 minute break , dont come in early and do the job properly .clashcityrocker wrote:How do you work to your time if there isn't enough work to do?eastie wrote:Work to your time on Mon and Tues thats what I do and then its only the early starters that will get asked to starburst

Re: Long and Shorts
They can suggest longs and shorts, and if it gets voted in then fine, but if the vote goes against it's tough. I was referring to the fact that my boss wanted us to do 3 weeks at 52 hours and have a rest week, we cannot be forced to go past 39 hours per week, ever. In actual fact, my colleagues and I wanted to do 4 day weeks at 9.45 per day, but they rejected it as it wasn't convenient for them.dvbuk55 wrote:UnhappyGremlin wrote:It clearly states in the 2010 Business Transformation agreement that any staff member can retain their current hours if they wish, though RM seem to be ignoring the agreement when inconvenient..Yes I believe that they referred to the number of hours worked NOT when they were worked.
The only options that they promote/and are willing to accept are beneficial only to RM, I don't personally know anyone that has proposed and got one they wanted.

Re: Long and Shorts
how can it be a fair vote when union rep is giving is personal opion and the flock follow he should read about what a union rep duties are before he opens mouth, in this case coz off it vote has to be void
