My partner/fiancee's Grandmother past away unexpectedly last night. When I went into work today I mentioned it to my manager about needing the funeral off. His reply was that they don't usually allow it for someone who isn't actually a blood relative.
Is he correct?

"Bereavement:
The special leave policy allows for up to one week with pay for the death of next of kin and blood relative, (spouse or civil partner, child, parent, sibling) and one day with pay for parent in law (or the equivalent in a civil partnership or longstanding unmarried relationship), or grandparent.
Discretion for additional time off with pay may be granted in exceptional circumstances. If the circumstances are not exceptional, any additional time off granted will be unpaid, or taken as annual leave.
Discretion for time off with pay, in circumstances where the relationship to the deceased is not covered by the above, may be granted if the circumstances are ‘truly’ exceptional.
If the circumstances are not ‘truly’ exceptional, any time off granted will be unpaid, or taken as annual leave."
Basically, you can get the day off as unpaid or use a days annual leave

Cheers for the reply. I didn't ask nor expect to get paid for the day just wanted it of as the Mrs was close to her gran so is pretty upset.

Management would use one of the many days they have accrued under the TOIL system even though they never appear to work their day off.hans solo wrote:but what would mgmt get

Re: advice needed.
The date of the funeral has been arranged today for a week Thursday so I've downloaded the special leave form and filled it in. I'll hand it in tomorrow and see what's said. Even the union rep when I asked for advice doesn't seem to think I'm entitled to it off..

Re: advice needed.
You are entitled to a day as the first reply stated, I would also show your Dom that if I was you. If all else fails I would not hesitate to go sick for a week and blame it on the stress and worry they caused you.
