managing the decline of letters???
we have just had the busiest week on delivery in years, thousands over the model week every day, but we are now being told,we are a parcel company managing the decline of letters??? what other company would constantly go on about the decline of one of its products, if it wants private investment?

Re: managing the decline of letters???
I don't think there will be a decline of mail, but what we want is no more door to door nonsense and focus on winning more parcels as this will earn more money for the company.

Re: managing the decline of letters???
I can accept that there is a decline in letters. But this decline has been replaced with massive amounts of junk mail.

Re: managing the decline of letters???
We had a very busy week, next week is even worse with 5 D2Ds which include a catalogue from DFS, British red cross with those
poxy pens in them, plus 3 other ones, if there is a decline in letters it is more than compensated for with the increase in D2Ds, so stop insulting our intelligence, we know because we deliver the stuff every day, the increase in parcels D2Ds, i have been in the job 12 years, and have never been so busy, every day is like Christmas with the increase in parcels, so its about time Royal mail started to look after its staff rather than persecuting them.

Re: managing the decline of letters???
They have been saying it for years and its total crap , its an excuse for them to lapse and to make savings on hours;
i dont ever hear of managers bonuses declining do you, there are constantly more houses bieng built , houses turned into flats etc ,
and there are fewer of us and bigger duties ,so work load is greater ,
in last 6 years my workload has grown while my hours have shrunk ,
i think these statements are made for the public to justify cuts, price hikes , poorer service and standards etc. its a battle we will always struggle with as royal mail has political and media support,
while we have the cwu who have enough on thier hands with trying to galvanise a very flakey and self important workforce ,there are to many people not doing the job properly , things wont improve till unilaterally we all work correctly and to our contracted hours

We, and the public, are being deliberately mis-informed. In other words, to suit the right-wing privitisation brigade, the 'all public services are bad, all privateers good, profits before service,' we are all being lied to by the scumbags.

We'll be making a big investment in the Royal Mail parcels business. It will significantly outstrip the money we are putting into Parcelforce

Re: managing the decline of letters???
i cant work out how much mail is down, over the years it *seems* it isnt down that much (and much more since the 90s) but what REALLY is affecting the RM which they never seem to talk about is down-stream access. Delivering competitors mail at tiny margins is whats really hurting the business. I dont know why this practise is still allowed in a "open competitive market" which the regulator seems to want.
If its a true competitve market then RM should be allowed to refuse DSM and force these companies who leech off RM to deliver their own mail which they wouldnt do as it wouldnt be cost effective, in so doing RM would gain these mail items and make MUCH more profit on them. It would benefit the every day customer too as I doubt RM would then have had to make such a price hike in stamp prices last year.
I dont know why RM management and CWU together havent kicked up more of a fuss about this over the years.... seems very fishy...

Re: managing the decline of letters???
My DOM tried telling us in a WTLL session that mail volumes are down by between 7 to 9%, year on year for about a decade. When I pointed out it was rubbish to claim this, he looked confused and asked why it wasn't true. I pointed out that, even taking 7% per year over 10 years, without 'compound interest', that meant a reduction of 70%. He admitted then the figure was nowhere near this, but closer to 25%. He asked why I hadn't believed his original claim, I said we all work on the front line, we see how much mail we are dealing with on a daily basis. (As the saying goes, don't p**s on me and tell me it's raining).
It was also pointed out to him, that staffing levels have dropped by at least the same amount, probably more. He didn't get the point being made, yes we have less mail, we also have less staff to deliver it.
I tols him when I started in 1996, a bad day, uaually Wednesday, I had 2.5 bags of mail. Within 5 or 6 years, that was up to about 10 or 12. That has now fallen to 8 or 9, so we still take more mail now than we did when I started, by some considerable distance.
However, at meetings end, he insisted I was wrong and that we take less mail now than we ever have. And they wonder why we don't believe anything we are told by management.

Exactly, right-wing bullshit, we should fight this to the end. Mis-information and downright lies.DirtyHarry wrote:We, and the public, are being deliberately mis-informed. What will happen if we get privatised? Either of these 2 scenarios, we will have our wages drop:
Scenario 1, worst case: We will be forced to take a wage cut to £7.50 an hour would be my estimate based on other companies. If we don't do this we will have a certain time period to get out, e.g. 90 days.
Scenario 2, best case: They will freeze all wages of people currently emplyed at higher rate. Newbies will be brought in at lower rate of £7.50. they will try and 'gradually phase out' the people on higher money, as in the way they are trying to screw over all the people currently on decent permanent contracts at the moment.
Either way we're screwed. f**k the Tories. Right wing pigs. All this so that a bunch of fat cats at the top can cream off the profits, while us lot at the bottom go home with less pay and live our lives much worse off. Classic Tory politics. Make the majority poorer, make a minority richer.

spot on,the tories have been wanting us privatised for years but the thing is a lot of their voters stay in the countryside and they would be the ones to get a worse service and as for the letters in decline what a joke if they told you it was raining you would go outside and check.TheCobra wrote:Exactly, right-wing bullshit, we should fight this to the end.
