walk sequenced mail?

Is there a distance that would be considered too far for an office to receive WSM? I always thought that if your office was over an hour away it would arrive too late or is it just the case that if it arrives before 9am say it would be considered viable?
As we know nothing about it other than what our Dim tells us can someone tell us what it entails?
How much tlme does it save on a town round 500 calls?
How much time on a rural 500 calls?
Will it run in order ie Rose cottage, upper farm, the forge, new house etc etc
Been told will halve our prep time so will have time for more delivery,

It should arrive in the order your frame is laid out. And mostly it does ; with the odd glitch here and there.

Now , the time saving element is open for debate.

If you don't know the walk it will save a substantial amount on prepping Mech.

If you know the walk well, then in my opinion it is not that dramatic a saving. Maybe 10 minutes or so over three trays. Maybe less depending on how well you know the frame.

The bottom line being ; WSM in no way saves the amount of time that RM have championed and hence based their figures on.

The mail arrives in trays and will be in the exact order of your frame, so as you pull a bundle out, it will run in order according to your frame.

Q: Will it save me time ?
A: NO, unless you are new, an experienced postie will know his/her frame very well and will not chuck out WSM any quicker than un-sequenced mail.

Q: Why are they introducing WSM ?
A: WSM is there to remove the skill factor an experienced postie has. Using WSM means they can now bring in any old Tom Dick or Harry off the street and he or she will be able to chuck that round off just as quick as an experienced postie can.

So what WSM has done is, remove the learning period from a new starter, one of the hardest parts of a posties job is to learn the frame, using WSM there is no learning ! and so RM benefit.

Don't be fooled by what your DOM tells you about WSM, it is utter crap.

I'd agree with most of your post, especially the skill factor. However 3 trays thrown up if it's properly walk sequenced will still be thrown up quicker by a postie who's been on the frame for years. One slot next to the other, bang bang bang, cm's to next slot rather than feet back and forth for every letter.

It all depends on how the mail is coded at the mail centres. If there are letters upside down, and that is how they have been coded (look for 2 sets of barcodes printed onto the envelopes), then the CSS machine will only sequence them if they are still upside down. The CSS machine can also sequence a few letters in a row that are back to front. If you get a significant amount of mail in a box that is wrong.........then I've probably had an oops moment, sorry.

as a reserve I think it is very helpful and it can speed up sorting for me. Now if we could go back to 5am start and finish before 1pm that would be great.

There's still all the unsorted stuff - flats etc - so what time "any Tom Dick or Harriet" can save on WSM is immediately lost ... until everything is Walk Sorted, it's just a tiny saving and therefore shouldn't be trumpeted as "the way forward" etc.

Plus it's great to know that a machine can sort stuff upside down and back-to-front ... unfortunately, when throwing in, us poor buggers with only two eyes still have to turn it around/flip it over ...
