driving in snow

we had a problem with snow this morning, had a meeting at work where the manager said it she'd done a weather assesment and it was safe to drive, the health and safety rep said it wasn;t on that basis nobody was prepared to drive , In the end it was agreed that the managers would drop us at a suitable point and we would deliver a loop,then make our own way back or contact the office to be collected.people began returning and were confonted by the managers who said. it was now safe in their opinion and we should load the vans and get on with it. no one would do it, we all offered to take loops that were in waliking distance and that wasn't accepted, our names were taken and it was hinted that we would not be paid for refusing a fair request, they refused to make any anouncement about it so we sat there until our finish time and went home, whilst they sat in their office sulking what a shirt firm we work for

Hmmmmmmm yes! A manager said to me today that he had delivered in worse snow and he knew that so had I - which is true we had both delivered in worse conditions BUT in totally different circumstances we delivered by pouch on deliveries that probably took 2 and a half hours under normal circumstances and second deliveries were still being done.

Have to agree on the shirt firm bit.
Conditions on the roads and pavements have been treacherous all week.
All we have had from our managers is use your own judgment and do a risk assessment on each street
Then if you fall or slip its your fault.
Heard more lies and bulls*it from our gaffers this week than ever before.
Anything to try and clear the office.
5 lots of D2Ds and mountains of mail plus all those packets and they wonder why we refuse to take it all out
Bet of all yesterday they gave us a free pizza voucher for our efforts this week

our gaffer gave us a free hand, "do it if you think you can, if you don't think you can do it leave it in". i just dropped footmans bags then did reggies and the delivery, left all the packets. footmen only sent bags out we knew we could get to (main roads) and left rest in. very amicable really.

Not quite within the spirit of the "National Brief for Operational Managers" is it

· Members are asked to remain aware of safety hazards and if they feel their delivery walk has become too dangerous or inaccessible due to poor weather, Managers will support their decision not to carry on and will encourage them to return to the office.
