What is the speed limit on these roads? Dirt track road in the countryside.
Why I ask is because one of my customers has put a sign on his box saying that all postal and delivery drivers please slow down on our road with postal and our underlined. Now this round is in the country , dirt track with a few pot holes. I go at a maximum 25 mph and he has complained to be that this is too fast and is creating the pot holes on his road. This road gives access to 4 houses so im not getting how it is his road. It is a steep road so when I drive back up I do feel i need the 15-25 mph to get up.
Am I in the wrong here? I know I dont go past 25mph and its not just me creating the pot holes.

60 mph unless signposted to the contrary, so legally you are not in the wrong.
But in practice we all have to try and get along with each other, so a compromise and a mutter under your breath every time you drive along the presumably unadopted road may be the course of least aggro.

Re: Question. Speed limit on dirt track roads?
we live on a rural road, and the delivery drivers for catalogues speed at 50+ mph... if my children where out they wouldnt see to get out of the way, and numerous pets killed on a very quiet rural stretch... Saying that though 25mph is an acceptable speed on a country dirt track... he needs to pay to fix his road...

you may find that the road does in fact belong to the four houses, question for you, how long is the actual road from the main road to the last house?

Re: Question. Speed limit on dirt track roads?
The road in total would be about half a mile long from the main road. His house is the 2nd one down with 2 at the bottom. Its at the start of my duty and am there always before 8. His children walk up the dirt track for school at earliest 8.15 which ive come across a couple of times only. The dirt track road is fairly steep and in the winter time with any snow or ice is no go and cant get back up.argyllflyer wrote:you may find that the road does in fact belong to the four houses, question for you, how long is the actual road from the main road to the last house?

It's likely to belong to either one of the four with shared access rights or all four of them jointly.
If he has put up this sign chances are he has his neighbour's consent or agreement so you will probably have to suck it up.
Not sure what you mean about needing 15-25 mph to get up the hill, that's why vans have gears.
You can go up a hill at 5 mph if you're in the right gear, although i would probably exempt LDV's from that, the only way to get an LDV up a hill is to floor it and hope the wind helps.

Re: Question. Speed limit on dirt track roads?
If it is a dirt track and his children use it, then 5 mph seems a speed at which you might be advised to go at when passing his house. He may own the road but the other houses may have a right of access along it, at the end of the day that guy is thinking about the safty of his kids, he may not be right but try looking at it from his view.DaveF14 wrote:The road in total would be about half a mile long from the main road. in thats case i would be very wary about how much you antagonise him, as if the road is his and the other properties they have at their disposal the nuclear option,DaveF14 wrote:The road in total would be about half a mile long from the main road. they could install a vehicle gate with lock which only lets pedesrians passed, in that case you would need to walk the road, you would have no way to complain as the rule to halt delivery and make it a excemption from delivery is a 15 minute round trip to a single delivery point from the main road

Re: Question. Speed limit on dirt track roads?
The main one to watch on this is if its a gated section of road in which case the limit is automatically 10mph.
But only on adopted highway (i.e public highwayone with access rights to all members of the public).
60 mph on all other adopted roads unless street lit in which case its automatically a 30mph.
Private road is up to the owner, although how they enforce it is a good question.
