What do Royal Mail Engineers do?

I am still quite young and was looking at the Apprentiship schemes Royal mail have, on their website here: http://startyourjourney.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Unfortunately it is quite vague as to what they actually do, so I was wondering if anyone here could shed some light.

There are two types of apprentice, one for machines and one for fleet (vehicles) I have emailed the scheme asking if there is any way I can get myself onto the machine based apprenticeship as I have worked on the machines for 12 years and was looking for a change but still within Royal Mail! Still waiting for a response!

Took over a week to fix the brake cable on a HCT at my DO! Could have nipped to the nearest bike shop and fixed it the same day for a fraction of the cost. If the sorting machine breaks down its at least 2 hours before thay arrive.

Royal Mail Apprenticeships are now a worthwhile form of training and at the end of the training whilst some attendances are not that family friendly earnings can be very good. In the past the apprentice scheme rum by Royal Mail was not regarded as being as good as similar schemes run by other companies but I was told a little while back that they are now on the same level as other firms which should make moving to another company more straightforward if you want to pursue a career outside RM. If you look at some of the technically better middle/senior managers (yes there are actually some) a lot of them are ex engineers, I worked for 2 and they were the best Linnos I had in 23 years.

Not really, automation processing machinery, PCs and servers etc for processing engineers, building installations for ROMEC, and the local handyman for trucks and trolleys. There's a difference, although as you can see in this thread, most don't appreciate it.
Go for it, but if you have no real interest or aptitude in this line of work you'll struggle badly and probably jack without finishing as sadly so many seem to do (and that's not just in RM).
There's strong competition for places, and the younger and more GCSEs you have the better chance you'll have of getting a place, plus you may need to travel to an MC offering placements.
Lastly transferring from current OP grades to ETGs is unlikely, unfortunately. That was tried about twenty years ago (before the current apprenticeship scheme was restarted) when there was a manpower shortage,and led to some personnel "disasters" which are still recalled with a shudder by the upper echelons of training,management, etc.
Give it a shot, you've nothing to lose, but you'll need to be realistic about your chances.

Absolutely, if tman can make it.............well, the world is your oyster Realistically it's what in the old days was called a caretaker or odd job man.
