walking speeds.
i remember walking speeds of 4mph being bandied about, then they showed on telly, a army fitneess instructor doing a round, and him saying it was,nt possible, in the time allotted, since then nothing, but if we really had to walk at 4mph(fat chance), how far in miles would we be walking each day on these new park and loop walks, that are the best part of 5 hours???

Re: walking speeds.
The 4mph was the speed you had to keep to whilst actually moving - taking into account the constant stops and attendance calls. The average speed for the whole duty was 2.1mph.
So its 2.1mph x 5 (less the time to drive from 1 loop to another)

Re: walking speeds.
Funny thing is the army dude didn't deliver the round he only put a leaflet through every door. No bag replenishing, packet delivery, signed fors etc. And he said he almost had to break into a jog to get round bang on time.osgoody1970 wrote:i remember walking speeds of 4mph being bandied about, then they showed on telly, a army fitneess instructor doing a round, and him saying it was,nt possible, in the time allotted, since then nothing, but if we really had to walk at 4mph(fat chance), how far in miles would we be walking each day on these new park and loop walks, that are the best part of 5 hours???

Re: walking speeds.
What about all the people who slow you down with "I cant find the key"
The people who turn the PDA upside down and press the buttons
The people who have to move the dog into the garden before answering
One of the two of you has to wait for the other when the loops actually finish , most of the time one doesnt finish anywhere near the van anyway .
I would have liked to see the fitness instuctor jog around at 4mph with a laden LW Trolley for 5 hours

still it worries me that my health will suffer in the long term, doing these 5 hour delivery spans, anyone else have an opinion on the fatigue that comes with these spans???

Re: walking speeds.
3 and a half hour deliveries you could get a bit of speed on but 5 hours you have to pace yourself plus you have to eat calories enroute

Yes,I think there will be more cases of plantar facillitis, particularly with Royal mails footwear policy, corns and bunions also the fleshly part of the heel will be prone to breakdown, mainly lower leg problems I would imagine and possible increases in skin cancer cases 20 or 30 years down the lineosgoody1970 wrote:still it worries me that my health will suffer in the long term, doing these 5 hour delivery spans, anyone else have an opinion on the fatigue that comes with these spans???

You really need to take a proper break half way through the delivery and stop and eat something.osgoody1970 wrote:still it worries me that my health will suffer in the long term, doing these 5 hour delivery spans, anyone else have an opinion on the fatigue that comes with these spans???

Re: walking speeds.
Why all the fuss, just walk at a comfortable pace that suits you, simples.....why would you want to rush around every working day, don't take the piss though, also , don't forget age can make a difference, don't forget a 50 ish person can sometimes have more wear and tear on there joints compared to a 20 year old.
I married my wife for her looks, but not the one she gave me when i said i was going to be a postman.
