Last-minute festive post could be thrown into chaos by a Royal Mail strike on Friday.

Postal engineers - who carry out maintenance and repairs at sites across the UK - are due to take action on what is traditionally one of the busiest days before Christmas.

Their strike could delay deliveries of presents from online retailers and hold up ordinary post too.

The Royal Mail strike on Friday involves almost 1,000 engineers and cleaners.

Although postmen and women themselves are not striking, it is understood some are unwilling to cross picket lines.

An overwhelming 92% of Communication Workers’ Union members who were balloted voted for strike action.

All work for Romec, a 50% joint venture between Royal Mail and construction firm Balfour Beatty.

The row centres on a three-month pay freeze from January this year.'
