Hello been with royal mail now a number of years now dont know about yourselfs but i find some of the vans a dirty disgrace who is it up to to keep on top of these vans with now our busy park and loop schedules????

fantasic reply and whens this meant to be done exactly give it a full valet in the mornings before we start?

the driver is responsible for the tidiness and upkeep of his/her van.

some places like the DO where I work don't have the facilities to be able to clean the vans and the closest car wash is 10 miles away, however when they are serviced or something needs sorting they go away and come back clean.

a daily van check is supposed to be done and 5 mins in the drivers day is set aside to do this.

On a light day!. Tuesday oh sorry we have that crap team telling then could you not come in on your day off you could clean them all then!. But would you get paid? No I say f@@k it as long as it has fuel in it and can see out of it ok with me.

Was told the other day that FIFTEEN minutes a day is allocated to van check/cleanliness. They make it up as they go along, and wonder why the job takes so long to complete.

We have the new royal mail vans at our DO and a couple of them keeping getting errors (clog in filter etc) a bloke came out to look and them and he told our manager that the new vehicles aren't built to stop and start all the time

All that needs done to fix them is to take them on a run, about 20 minutes at 50mph will clear the error (it's to do with burning off the particulates in the exhaust).

It should be easy OT for someone to take them out to clear the problem once a week

And newer cam bus vehicles require a full driving cycle (start up, cold, warm up to temp, up to speed etc) to calibrate its diagnostics. Stop/start can give these vehicles no reference point to compare data and can flag up faults. I can see huge issues arising in the future. Not that our office is ever likely to see a new van!

I dont mind a general tidy up of the van inside and out.

But what annoys me the most is when either floaters or collection drivers leave the van in a state...bags left in the cargo area as well as rubbish (cans, crisp packets, sweet wrappers) and the back of the van. They don't bother cleaning it up and never fill out the log book.

By not filling out the log book they will never be found, what a good tactic, but an illegal one at that.

seems to me maybe they should get a valeting team 2 people per office giving them a general tidy up each day and general maintenance e.g tyre pressure, water, oil, lets face it with the amount of work we get to do we have no chance to clean these vans and with weather comming up like slush/rain there going to become a real state , seems a waste spoiling nice new vans to me!

They wanted posties to form a valeting team as part of World Class Mail at our DO.

The idea was a couple of hours OT per day and if successful they would form duties out of it. Sadly only 2 people put their name down for it.
