How to do a packet delivery in a van

I thought in the run-up to Christmas, with all the extra packets that entails, that it would be useful if existing packet delivery van drivers would have any pointers on how they go about things. It's not a linear and straightforward like a sequenced mail delivery, and at this time of year new posties are often asked to give extra help on packets with little training.

So how do you organise your van, is there any efficient way to work your way over the area without retracing routes, do you have an inventory of addresses down on paper, anything else as well.

I would just wing it, RM don't really care otherwise they'd have a system in place with all the packets and their route.

having been a courier in a past life ( I know I will live in sin for the rest of my life for doing so ) load from bulkhead to back doors, then you can always see where you are going next as it will be the next pkt along.

that of course is in theory, you will always get the first massive box will thrown all over the back of the van because the people who ordered it are not in and you have P739'd it and have not got enough time to knock on every neighbours door to see if they will take it.

I go on drives I haven't done before all the time. As a starting pointer, put all the packets together for each road. Section areas of the van into different areas; start / middle / end, if you know the walks, if you don't then refer to a map. The main thing really is too make sure all the packets for each roads are together, so you don't keeping going back.

Spend some time on setting them in.
Get them in the order you want to run then load them into the van in reverse order.
Last out goes in first.
That's the sensible way to do it but as you work for Royal Mail you won't have the time to set them in. Your van will be full of bags,d2ds and trolleys so just throw them on top and hope for the best(like a manager)

When ive done packets i used to bunch them into walks / rounds starting from the bulhead down. Once i cleared one walk area i would re arrange the next walk in road order. Of course you need to know the deliveries and the roads, If that make any sense

Well this is how I do it. Open back door put all trays of Mail/small packets in order.

Then I start putting in the big packets.
In the back of van I put big packets which I do with my last rounds.
On the left side of van I put big packets which I do with my middle rounds.
On the right side of the van I put big packets which I do with my first rounds.

So when I deliver mail. If the big packets fit in the royal mail bag. I take them with me and deliver them. If the big packets don't fit in the royal mail bag I deliver big packets once I delivered mail. I sometime deliver big packets first in that area. Great way to get rid of big packets quick

I used to write on paper what big packets/specials/tracked. But i don't do that anymore.

I find it soo much easy to put big packets in Back/left/right

Throw them all randomly in the back and whatever comes to hand next...you go there.
What do i care?,i'm not paying for the fuel and for the moment we get paid by the hour,not by the packet.
I'm helping to protect full-time jobs.
Try not to go to the same door twice though...that's just embarrassingly amateurish.

Not were I worked, today I saw driver show off to the manager how much he could cram in the front of the van. He comes into work 2 hours early every day.

I get slagged for my system whenever I have to do packets but it works for me and it all gets done . I am the only one in the office doing it HA HA .

I get cards from yorks ( the ones with your DO on it ) or any bit of paper and I right out every road I come across on the packets . When I get another for that road I just add the number etc etc . Once they are all in I write it all down again neat and tidy hoping theres some doublers .

Hopefully it comes across easy enough .

We had another DO come into our building permanently and ive watched THEIR drivers do the exact same thing I have been doing ! ! !
