Not a fan - of 2 in a van!

Hi, I signed up today, not having known about this board before. A postman for 34 years, I truly hate the new way of working, which I believe is going to cost the company dearly in the long term. As morale seems to be low across so many delivery offices [except the smiley show piece ones that appear in Courier magazine] it would be fascinating to know how many would vote to return to the old way. Royal Mail's top-brass are unlikely to ever admit having made a mistake with the revision, nor, I guess, would they ever consider holding a ballot on our opinion. I wonder how Moya Greene and Mark Higson would cope working 2 in a van on our wages!

you are missing the whole point of the exercise

which is to piss of the 'old timers' the long term union types so they retire or quit - leaving only a part time easily manipulated workforce ripe for privaitisation - who don't care about the union or long term prospects and will take what they are given and do what they are told

as an aside the revision works well in my office probably one of the few it does ( truth not courier stile propaganda)

but then we have a great shift pattern ( 1 week off in every 4) to soften the blow of the longer hours

New way started in May this year, with some rounds OK, others not so. After various prep plans, testing, timing and other attempts at making the problem look our fault and not the planners, we have been told up to 5 hours [no less!!!] are to be put back in after Christmas. You are right in saying it is the older post persons who are most fed up.

Yet to physically see a P&L pair in our place actually use the correct delivery tools, as in load up two bags on a LWT for each loop, walks rarely finish on time with them carrying pouches well in excess of 12kg. Christ knows what they are doing now the Xmas pressure is in full flow!

in our office it has been a disater the round i am on they merged 3 deliveries and a packet round into 2 in a van we have approx 4 and a half hours to complete the delivery which is impossible the worst thing is the managers know it but try to make you feel imcompetent when you complain

Postmen want to work by themselves. One day you might feel a bit rough and want to amble round and another day you might be full off beans and go faster.
You might get stopped by someone for a chat but now you cant stop.
You have to deliver mail sorted by someone else.
You have to work with so called partners who want to start early when you want to start on time
You might have a partner who doesn't want a meal relief and you do
You might not want to keep losing money on your mobile phone when pranking your drivers phone goes to Orange answerphone when in bad receiption area.
you have to keep stopping waiting for the driver to bring your next loop
you have to keep telling the DOM its not always the walkers fault going over when the driver is BLOODY SLOW

Not in our office eastie.
Two in a van means two in a van,we are both in the van when we drive to the first loop,the second loop,third,fourth,fifth and sixth.
The only time the driver is in the van without the walker is to deliver the odd large packet that might be off route.
Park&Loop was not about dropping guys off and feeding them with mail,we could have just stuck with the pouch boxes if that was the case.

Who agreed to such a a stupid revision process? Each person in the van gets out and does a loop,then moves on to the next loop et sequentia until the delivery is complete. I sometimes wonder what the union are doing to monitor the systems in practise, well no I don't wonder I know it's nothing.

Well in my office Fishtank on my round the end of each loop is the start of the next loop. But then again they are not loops as such as they dont finish back to the van .
Due to the geography a lot of our P/L rounds only have houses on one side of the road so you finish your bag/loop whatever you want to call it 800 yards away from where you started, further along the road . Thats why I only get in the van at the start and at the end.
Plus no we have never used pouchboxes either.
In built up places maybe it can be done in loops back to the van but not in all cases in the smaller towns
