'No Junk Mail' signs

We're all told to ignore these "no junk mail" signs on doors and post boxes etc. unless the person at the address has opted out officially. I always have ignored them but today I had a rather irate person open the door just after I'd posted the D2Ds asking me if I could read and why we persist on posting them when they have a sign up. Anyway I told them how to opt out and that I was just following procedure etc.

Their response was that as I was on private property if I do it again they will call the police because I'm "littering". I don't think they would really be able to take it anywhere but I was pondering on it as I was delivering as they do have a point. What do you all think?

D2D's are now live mail therefore have to be delivered even if they have a NO JUNK MAIL sign.

if you don't deliver it you could be sacked for willful delay.

you could also tell them that they can always collect their mail from the DO if you are not allowed access to their doorstep.

I also think that the police would'nt do anything about it as you are on Queens business

Ignore them and carry on with the Door To Doors if they've not opted out.
You have an assumed right to trespass to deliver mail and littering is surely only in open or public places.

What can I do if my sticker is being ignored?
Any 'No Junk Mail' sign is not more than a polite request not to push commercial leaflets through your door. Whereas you have a legal right not to be bothered with addressed junk mail, you can't force individuals or organisations to stop delivering unaddressed junk mail.

So what about unaddressed junk mail? If you'd push litter through my letterbox I'd probably shout some vile Dutch expressions at you. Next, I might report you to the police, who will probably agree that your actions constitute littering and harassment. Yet, if you push tens of leaflets through my door your actions are suddenly considered to be quite normal - even if I have a sign on my door saying 'No Junk Mail'. Isn't there room for legal action here?

I reckon the answer is 'no'. There's an Offence of Leaving Litter (Article 87 of the Environmental Protection Act), which states that you're not allowed to “throw down, drop or otherwise deposit […] anything whatsoever […] as to cause, or contribute to, or tend to lead to, the defacement by litter of any place to which this section applies.” However, the places to which the section applies are “public open spaces”. It's alright then, it seems, to thrown down, drop or otherwise deposit litter in a private space.

I really cannot see why,all the big things wrong with this country and the world today and some people get all stressed up over a bit of paper,I just ignore them and shove it through,I had one halfwit follow me for about 1/4 mile to give me 2 laggy bands once saying I had dropped them on his path.

If I remember rightly there was a FOI request on this subject and the response from RM said any postie not delivering to any address (unless they had an official opt out) would face disciplinary action under the Conduct Code for wilful delay.

If a Postal Officer did not deliver to the address and the customer has not officially opted out of the
service, they may face disciplinary action as this would be considered wilful delay of mail.

Yes, and occasionally someone will take delight in screwing it up or tearing it up in front of me as if I would be the slightest bit concerned.

The sooner RM cough up and make a little less profit out of D2D's by putting them in an A4 envelope the better everyone's lives will be although cannot see it happening!!! I was getting GBH in the earhole from someone the other day and really had to grit my teeth not to be rude as was at the end of an extremely long day!!!

I think it would be interesting to see how many people would opt out if it was easy to opt out (e.g. simply by ticking a box on the royal mail website)!

If people give me grief about D2Ds I always just say 'that's what your blue bin is for', smile and walk away. It's pointless entering into an argument with these cretins who obviously have nothing better to do with their lives than give grief to people doing their job.
