Opting out of Xmas OT and then being sent to another office

Post by krussel »

We had our Christmas meeting with the DOM today and someone raised the question of not wishing to work any overtime over Christmas. Our DOM said that anyone wishing not to work overtime would be removed from their duty and given other work to perform but not necessarily in this office.

So the question is can she actually do this, i.e.; Send someone to work at another office because they choose not to work overtime ?.

yes she can using the "operation requirements" excuse however said person being moved is perfectly entitled to turn up at their office at their normal start time and then either get transported or given a vehicle to get to the new office, and then either be transported or given a van to get back to their office for their normal finish time, so in effect its not really going to be that much hardship for them if they are only working their hours, they will basically spend more of it travelling back and forth leaving less time to be on delivery or sorting

Hi Krussel,You do realize that this is what gaffers do.It's a threat to scare you into doing overtime at xmas.I've heard it for a few years now.Still haven't been taken of my duty and sent to another office. As zx135 say's, travel to and from office means less delivery time :Very Happy .

Where does the "operation requirements" come in to this zx?
If the excuse of operational requirements is used it has to stand up to scrutiny,it isn't a cover all that allows management to do what they like....this is simply pressurising members to work overtime.
The Local Christmas Operational Agreement is by definition...an Agreement.
That Agreement should cover overtime, who wants to do it,who doesn't,more importantly who can't and how it should be allocated.
If,as part of the Christmas Agreement a manager proposed to send those who couldn't work overtime to another office i would expect it to be thrown out by the rep and a disagreement lodged.
We also have an agreement on working in other offices which states that volunteers and reserves should be used, not duty holders.

This really is a time for solidarity.
The pathetic threat of "I'll send you to another office" should be countered by a whole office refusing to do any overtime.
What would she do? Send you all to another office?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

no, have asked my area and divisional reps about this, you have a contract, say 30 hours, then its all you have to do.

as we dont have the full facts on the issue in the office then yes operational requirements may be the issue, we dont have any fact either way, as for operation requirements it could be Office A has duty A with 4 Hours work required but being covered by postie A who is on an 8 hour day thus incurring special duties in the office, and office B has duty B with 8 Hours work required but being covered by postie B who is on 4 hour day thus incurring 4 hours over time, yes bad planning on part of the area, so operational it is better to move postie A to office B and do duty B and move postie B to office A and do duty A thus paying 12 hours for 12 hours work in total rather than 16 hours for 12 hours work

No we don't have the full facts and as with anything on this forum, no advice should be taken as gospel but for those of us that work on the frontline the rather pathetic management fallback position of - make life easy for me or I'll make life difficult for you - is all too common.
People don't have to work overtime. (Rafa: fact) It creates a situation where managers have to do what they are paid for: to manage.
The fact so many don't appear to be able to do this without resorting to bullying and harrassment suggests they should be employed elsewhere.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Or it could be what krussel said.....
Our DOM said that anyone wishing not to work overtime would be removed from their duty and given other work to perform but not necessarily in this office.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Well so far iam the only one who has stood up and said iam not doing it. I think this kind of threw people. :hmmmm

Ok last year i did not do the xmas OT and was removed from my duty and perfomed indoor work and parcels which i did not mind. Going to another office does not appeal too much as with xmas pressure i cant see getting back on time happening.

Ok ive now spoken to my area rep and Fish is right in saying that xmas arrangements are seperate and duty holders are not required to work outside the office :Applause

He was not very happy in the manner of which the meeting was conducted so will be popping in to see the good lady on the subject of intimidation and harassment to perform overtime.
