Expired Redirection
When a redirection is finished, we were under the impression that the mail should be posted to the old address until the new occupants say they no longer want to accept it. However, we have now been told by a new DOM that the mail MUST be delivered to the old address whether the new occupants want it or not. Does anyone know what the correct procedure is?

it's upto the people who receive the mail to decide what they do with it ie: bin it or readdress it and repost it.

We have to deliver as addressed end of,it's up to the new occupiers to endorse and send back.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Well that's what we do until occupier sends mail back endorsed 'gone away', then we don't deliver it anymore. Customers don't like other people's mail being posted through their doors!!

It will come back to you in the end whether you pick it up off the doorstep or wait for it to come back in the mail to send off to the dead mail office.

a person might have returned to the address after the redirection stops.
Dont always presume that the person has left and kill it off

Absolutely - we had a case where the people had moved out to have work done on their home and moved back in some weeks later - unfortunately the postman kept signing it off as gone awayeastie wrote:a person might have returned to the address after the redirection stops.

Also the old occupants may have an arrangement with the new ones to pass their mail on. Just keep delivering it.

Deliver as addressed. I made the mistake of sending an old woman's stuff back for an entire year until I noticed one day she was still there. Turned out it was a one week temporary redirection whilst she was in the hospital (she sealed her letterbox as well). Walked into work the next day to a complaint from her daughter. 
The machine stops.

I've seen me putting mail back through the door i know has been sent back but with no endorsement.
It's not my job to guess what's going on behind the door,it's either clearly endorsed by the customer or it gets delivered,again and again if necessary.

Use your common sense/discretion - in most cases you know damn well what the score is ... I've several at the moment which include "deceased" peeps and people who I KNOW don't live there - so I kill 'em off at source.
"Deliver as addressed" can make you look bloody stupid/thick at times ...
