I started at Royal Mail 5 years ago full of enthusiasm and raring to go. In my interview for the job I was told my 25 hour contract would become 40 hours within 6 months. I couldn't understand why everyone in my office was so negative about the company, moping around complaining about management all the time. I used to think "get on with it, its a good job". I planned to stay in the job until retirement, after all I would soon be on 40 hours and with a decent pension. Early starts and finishes were also a bonus.
Fast foreward 5 long and frustrating years with Royal Mail. I am still on 25 hours despite being promised year on year I would be made up to 40 hours. Although I get more hours most weeks its the uncertainty of having my hours cut that bothers me, which has happened for the past two Christmases of all times. Before the revision I had a 30 minute meeting with a manager from another office and he promised me I would be made up to full time if I voted for the revision. It never happened. Now I moped about complaining about management all the time. After writing letters and phoning people constantly asking why I have been lied to for so long, I admitted defeat. The company had broke me.
But I have won. I start another job, full time and permanent, in a week. It has taken me 18 months of applying and assessments and interviews, but I got there in the end.
Dont get me wrong I will miss the job itself, and the people in the office who have made the job bareable, but as for the company, no.
To Royal Mail: If only you treated your employees with a little more respect you would get so much more out of them, like loyalty.

Well said !! Sadly they dont seem to care , if you do 5-10-50 years it makes no difference to them ! And when your genuinely signed off sick you return to stupid warnings ! Good move getting out mate - good luck :-)

Well said Jadam, there's an almost identical couple of paragraphs to my life at RM...........apart from still working for them! 25 hours with promises to be made full-time......4 years down the line and still waiting.

i wouldnt waste time emailing `moya`,,,she emailed me back last time telling me my manager never left walks in,,,or skimmed mail....LOL...i was wrong.
and yeah can relate to u joining,,,,i did 7 years back an everybody warned me not to trust em,,,its all lies,,bla bla....and i thought these postmen were a negative bunch,,,,ha yeah 7 years later i tell new starters similar,,,LOL i found out that all the postmen were right and the crap of management was unreal
