Holiday Entitlement 2014

Post by jontickle »

We were told in our office that all holiday entitlement up to April 2014 had to be booked today or else they would just go ahead and book it for us.

Due to the retarded system of booking a holiday, i had to fight with a half dozen other posties for dates, not that i really knew which dates i wanted anyways but i had to put something down or else i was looking at an 8 month block without a holiday. Seeing as we are already under a "holiday lockdown" for the next 6 months where they are refusing to allow anyone to book time off for the rest of this year unless you have it pre booked it was like throwing scraps to the wolves.

Its beyond a joke. I think i would have more rights if i were banged up than i do working for the Royal Mail. Surely this cant be legal?

How on earth am i supposed to know what i am doing in two years time? Everywhere i have worked previous has just asked for reasonable notice i.e 6 weeks notice of a holiday to give them time to sort out cover. I now have to give up to 2 years notice, just to get a week off.

I've already had time booked for me by the manager this year as i wasnt willing to give 18 months notice for a holiday but now they have upped it to 2 years. Where do i stand on this? is it possible for them to force this upon me or am i right in thinking all i have have to give is reasonable notice?

I do sympathise, as we were given holiday forms in August one year, asking people to confirm what weeks they wanted for the 12months between April of the following year and March of the year after that !!! This company is a joke. They claimed they needed to have sufficient notice of who was off so they could better match the staffing levels to the predicted volume of work. I said 'yeah, like you can really see that far ahead... you can't even accurately forecast what's coming in tomorrow, let alone as much as 19 months ahead!!'.
IIRC, most people just picked random weeks and then as soon as we got to April of the year in question, hit the management with an absolute blizzard of 'change of leave' requests. Ever since, they've issued the Annual Leave forms much closer to the start of the leave year :left:

Are system isnt to bad we get alloacated 3 weeks in the summer april till sep, and then the following year it moves forward 6 weeks i.e if your holidays were 1st may this year to 21st may the following year they would bebeggining of august and so forth, then we get a week in the winter between oct and march, I liker to split mine up so 2 weeks in the summer a week autumn and a week jan to march id I can swap.

Our holiday entitlement now seems to be decided by a morning call of:
We're overstaffed today. Does anyone want the day off?

Getting any time off for holiday in my office is impossible. I dont even bother booking anymore. The weeks I def know I need I just take sick. Sod them.

It's now Sep 2012 and we have already picked our holidays for April 2013 to March 2014. We pick in rotation by sections and the sections 4 of them rotate annually so this year I'm in 1st section pick 11 so I'm going to get whatever I've picked - but 2014 to 2015 I'll be 151st or so and I'll get crapola - of course I will probably have retired by then :dance or not.............................................

It is a pain as

I find it impossible to get time off in august bank holiday weekend. (For Holland Summer Salsa Congress which I never been)

Also Week off must be Mon-Sat and it doesn't work for me. As I like to return home on Monday from holiday/weekend away.

I don't want to book first holiday in 2 weeks block. I prefer 2 X 1 week off and 4 x long weekend. I plan my holidays round salsa.

But most if not all holiday firms only go a year in advance, especially foreign ones with the flights and such, what chance have you got with that?

More chance of Darren Bent getting a hat trick than getting a long weekend off!

We've just been informed that we have to come up with a system using the new 'hours' method of picking leave, whereby leave is now calculated by hours rather than weeks. Trying to find info out about whether this has been agreeed, or how it's different to having week slots etc.

Has anyone else been informed that they have to change the way the leave is calculated, chosen etc, we've just been moved into the South West and Gloucestershire area

Some managers really are lazy and stupid.................pick 40 hours during a Monday to Saturday period of your choice but then I really think it could be beyond some managers to think :nervous
