Counting mail..overtime
In my office lately if you require overtime on your duty go see your line manager who in turn will count your mail..Never got mine counted result being not being payed for 30mins overtime....Absolutely ridiculous especially when the management were their when i got back from my delivery and i brought it to their attention i was over my time...Whats the rights and wrongs of this latest tactic..anyone..

Re: Counting mail..overtime
It's nonsense.
Bring it to the attention of your rep, then branch.
In the meantime tell them to poke their overtime...no pay...no play.

In order for something to be done nationally it must first be flagged up through the branch structure.goldy wrote:This is going on now in our office the rep knows ive stuck my kneck out before but nothing gets done its not just our office at least somthing needs to be done nationally .fishtank wrote:It's nonsense.

HQ seldom act on anecdotal evidence direct from members but.....if you have already done that and believe your rep isn't pushing it to branch or that branch is sitting on it(never

Re: Counting mail..overtime
I can't understand the inconsistency of office management - our DOM has made it quite clear that the business wishes to avoid overtime if possible but also that it is not compulsory and anyone agreeing to go over their time if it is needed to finish a duty will be paid as long as the DOM or Line manager are notified before departure. That is noted on an extended delivery sheet and total estimate for the office that day is flagged up to the SOM at the morning conference call.
We are now nearly two years into our P&L revision and our managers know that the variables of numbers of specials, large parcels and tracked items that we now do on van shares can send duty times haywire - I can't wait until we are playing "Hunt the neighbour" when the new packet rule comes in - that should be worth a few stress lines for the managers who are trying to keep costs down - that is an idea that someone who has never done a delivery came up with :)
By the way ...is the time taken to count the mail added to the overtime needed to complete ???

Re: Counting mail..overtime
I know a few people here tend to say that people should cut-off or take certain amount of mail mail. But, how can the the amount being cut-off or taken back be so precise; especially given many different circumstances that happen with delivery.
Just wondering... I know that one can easily tell if one might go over but the amount in minutes or work-piece???
Counting mail or physical inspection of bags and such appears to be more prevalent with some managers and offices these days. Postie should be careful when cutting off - It will be advisable not to rush round and possible finish early after cutting off; esp for those that cut off regularly.
In my office, large number of posties still keep coming in early, rushing around, using the van like a bicycle, not using trolleys, doing door-to-doors days before despite being warned by the manager that this might lead to lapsing
as it has happened in other offices. Some people, hey?

Bet they do but hang on, with the delivery method revisions and the model week shouldn't they be paying out overtime for around two thirds of the yearour DOM has made it quite clear that the business wishes to avoid overtime

Re: Counting mail..overtime
I have found that sometimes I go over the time and sometimes I am under the time however, over the course of a week I would say it just about evens out. So I don't claim the OT.
I wonder how many of those moaning are just as quick to point out when they finish early.
Obviously if it's a regular occurrance then claim. If they don't pay, don't do. It really is that simple.

Re: Counting mail..overtime
It is not for us to initiate flexible working although, because we have what I regard as good managers in our ofice we dismiss a "few" minutes over and apply the swings and roundabouts principle, knowing that those "few" minutes come back to us. However - overages in excess of 15 minutes eat into your own free time and invariably add up to more physical demands on your system, whereas very early finishes due to "quiet times", I feel are down to bad management or organisation at MC level.Postal Postie II wrote:I have found that sometimes I go over the time and sometimes I am under the time however, over the course of a week I would say it just about evens out. In an ideal world we would be like most office or retail business's where the doors open and one time and close at another and we would only do overtime at stocktaking or sale time and be paid or given time off accordingly. Whilst our business cannot control it's daily labour needs because it cannot control it's flow of work, there will always be people who think they can change their own finishing times by coming in early on one hand and managers who try to limit their expenditure by unreasonable means on the other.
There is no easy answer but a move in the right direction is having good labour relations and I am afraid Royal Mail has missed the post on that one .
