Being a newbie and having my induction and start date at the end of this month I have being reading the many posts on this forum. It appears that in every DO there are workers who start work well before their appointed time and also some workers who use their private cars on deliveries. Lots of advice is given along the lines of, 'don't use your car and don't give them a minute extra'.
My question is this, if a worker has an industrial accident or car crash before their allotted start time , would they be covered by RM insurance ?
In previous jobs it was drilled into me that if something went wrong before my start time I would not have a leg to stand on, accident permitting.
Can anybody clarify on this, please ?

Re: Covered by RM insurance?
Car Crash/accident - No.
The cover provided by RM is for getting to the duty and back, and moving the vehicle while on delivery - and is 3rd Party only. So you wouldn't be covered as you are not the 3rd Party. It's also being withdrawn slowly but surely.
As to an Industrial Accident - it would depend on many factors so there is no hard and fast rule. You could be injured just entering the yard by a bad driver, you might then be covered. But if you decided to move a fork lift without proper training, no supervision, without signing in and before your start time - then the chances of being covered is very slim.

Re: Covered by RM insurance?
Royal Mail's employer liability insurance covers the place of work, not the hours of work so if you had an accident on the premises outside your working hours you would still be covered by their insurance however any payout would normally be subject to a negotiation process where a level of "blame" will be set and the fact that you should not have been on the premises would be used against you to reduce any personal injury compensation.
Your counter argument would be that it's accepted practice.

So what happens if you are injured by someone who shouldn't have been there?fishtank wrote:Royal Mail's employer liability insurance covers the place of work, not the hours of work so if you had an accident on the premises outside your working hours you would still be covered by their insurance however any payout would normally be subject to a negotiation process where a level of "blame" will be set and the fact that you should not have been on the premises would be used against you to reduce any personal injury compensation.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Still covered, we're all covered while we're employed, otherwise we couldn't go in for a meeting if we're sick etc.clashcityrocker wrote:So what happens if you are injured by someone who shouldn't have been there?fishtank wrote:Royal Mail's employer liability insurance covers the place of work, not the hours of work so if you had an accident on the premises outside your working hours you would still be covered by their insurance however any payout would normally be subject to a negotiation process where a level of "blame" will be set and the fact that you should not have been on the premises would be used against you to reduce any personal injury compensation.
