Ways to be quicker?

Post by sf25 »

Hi there

I only started about 6 weeks ago and have been on my own walk for around 3 weeks now. However I am meant to finish around 1pm and find myself out until around 2pm on a heavy day and even on a light day I find myself finishing on time or at best 15 mins early.
Does anyone have any tips on how to be faster or am I just being paranoid? Does everyone find that they feel slow to start with?

The speed will come eventually, as long as your getting paid your OT then don't worry about it.

I wouldn't try to race around - you'll only make mistakes. If you are sometimes finishing early then you must be going at a reasonable rate. If you don't want to work beyond your contracted hours then tell your boss. If you do work beyond your hours then make sure you get paid overtime.

Chin up - it gets easier.

come in an hour early like the idiots who are quicker than you. your not supposed to work yourself into an early grave. go at a sensible pace for yourself, do the job properly and they can't touch you. and if you don't want to do o/t cut off. come the next revision the speed merchants will have aload more wacked on their dly so they'll have to come in 2 hours early.

How old are you and do you consider yourself to be fit and healthy?
To be honest i have never been concerned about 'speed' as i see many posties who race around like headless chickens, come in early, use their cars etc..all in an effort to get home 30 mins early so they can watch Jeremy Kyle ...very often these are the ones who make many mistakes on delivery..leave lots of mail in..never talk to customers(ignorant sods),and certainly don't know how to fill P739 cards correctly..lol..nope..i am a plodder...and proud of it...i don't make too many mistakes..and quite often posties want me to do their walks as opposed to the headless chicken brigade as basically..i do the job properly i think.

If you have just started six weeks ago then you are prob doing the worst and longest walk in the office. It's the way it goes.

I'd say going 1 hour over on a heavy day is par for the course and perfectly normal, you've got nothing to worry about as long as you're happy to go over and are getting paid for it.

This is my 5th week in and at first I was worried about speed and finishing on time. I was running around like a headless chicken and basically jogging around my round. I was wrecked then everyday I when I got home. It was then I actually realised that I was on a full time round and trying to do what a full-timer has 8hours to do in four and a half hours! Now I just take my time and book the overtime! :chuckle

Firstly I agree with all the above as trying to increase your walking pace will lead to mistakes and prob force you to go off sick with a strain of some sorts.

Speed tends to come with experience of a walk over some time.

A few extra recorded items or leaving p739’s can add a surprising amount of time to a delivery as well.

Sounds like your doing fine to me. :thumbup

you seem to be doing fine, I on 25 hours and am due to finish at 1pm.

when I first started I was getting worried about my speed as I was always going over and thought i would get in trouble for taking too much time
It took me a while to realise that everyone else was full time or 30hrs with a finish time of 2pm. meaning i had an hour less a day to do the same amount of work as all the other PTers. RIDICULOUS!!

It took me a while to learn to stop worrying and now I'm perfectly happy if I'm done by 2 and book whatever I need to, as I always get paid the OT

If I'm done by 1 it must be an extra quiet Tuesday!!

As everyone said you are doing fine - no need to speed up. In fact it seems like you are smack on the curve, you'll soon be taking on extra on docket if you want, as your body gets used to the physical effort.
