Lifting your hands to a manager

There was a incident in my office yesterday when a colleague got into a heated argument with a line manager..The result being words we exchanged and the Postie shoved the line manager twice in the argument...Will an apology be suffice from the postie or is this a hanging offence?..The D.O.M..was contacted on the matter...

It's never good but it will depend on a lot of things like circumstances,provocation,witnesses,was the manager acting in a threatening manner,did he have the guy backed in a corner,was the member just trying to get away from the situation or was he actively aggressive himself...
Every situation is different but if the manager wants to take it further it's definitely an area rep job from the start.

Obviously if this line manager was :ncfo :vcfo in the posties face and the guy/girl felt threatened then merely pushing this idiot away is using reasonable force/self defence to avoid a very real possibility of a good old fashioned punch up...no doubt the DOM will stick up for his line manager who sounds a complete tool,if he/she has to revert to :ncfo :dcfo :dcfo to get a point across...in my book the postie was provoked,he/she used reasonable force to deter the aggressor,..looking at the bigger picture..this line manger would appear to need anger/man management sessions based on what i have read.

There is no excuse to put hands on any member of staff.Because if it was a manger that did it to a postman we would be looking to get him the sack or moved to a different office.So the rules should be the same for everyone.I know that I have sometimes wanted to kick some line mangers heads in due to there stupid but i have felt like that about some postman to but have never lost it yet:shock:what office was it ?

The way things are going in RM then I would doubt an apology would suffice, as Fishtank said, get the area rep involved asap.

Surely violence can never be tolerated whatever the situation, albeit to a manager or whoever else! Many a time, in work or in a social situation, I've felt the need to give someone a slap aha but never actually done it. Think the guys looking at the sack, probably deservidly so!

It's impossible to make that kind of judgement without knowing all of the facts so really you should try not to.

So when would you say its ever possible to justify raising your hands to another employee? There's always an alternative to violence. Just saying it as I see it!

I would say that it is always possible for anyone to do the wrong thing given the right sort of circumstances and/or provocation.
You can't just say it as you see it because you are not in a position to see it...none of us are.
