CWU Officers on Royal Mail's board

Post by fishtank »

There are two motion at conference this year which are more or less opposite positions.
On the one hand we have this from the PEC who are more or less asking for permission to push ahead with negotiations to place CWU National Officers inside the Royal Mail Boardroom.

And there is this from Bristol....which is far more to the point.

How do the members feel about being so closely tied to the employer...or will it give us more of a say?
I'm trying to keep this nuetral but most members on here will already know how i feel. :whistle
Feel free to discuss.

Sorry its a big No from me.

If these are their argument for. Here are mine against:

A new model of employee ownership: No requirement for the Union to be on the board for that, we could transfer any employee ownership rights to the Union and they could vote en-bloc.

A new governance model: Apart from them being on the board in name, what's the difference now. We have as far as I am aware parity between the different organisations.

A new company model with transparency and accountability. Before you start something like that you have to change the culture of management within Royal Mail - does this mean the "hawks" will be moved sideways or out of the company, good bye Mr Higson. This is a pointless exercise unless you get the members on board and that's not going to happen unless there is a complete change of Mind set from Delivery Office to Board room.

However, for me, the one big obstacle is when there is a clash between what is perceived as best for Royal Mail but erodes employees T&Cs, how would it be handled. If the Union are on the board are we sure they would be able to withstand the clash of conscience and defend us.

But not while you're on duty
Seriously though, greater cooperation between management and the CWU, Billy introducing Moya to pies, she'll never look the same again

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
