I know the mail is dropping each year but how long will it be before Royal Mail get rid of staff and replace them with machines to do the work?

I keep on hearing from different people that it won't be long before ppl start to lose their jobs, as there either won't be enough work for them or the work will be done by machines. Is this true?

I've also heard through different ppl that the first to go will be the newest staff. I've been there 4 1/2 years so by no means a veteran compared to alot of people at royal mail.

Just a tad curious about my job security thats all.

Employers dream of having staff who work their nuts off for nothing.
Tomorrow's postman will be your son/daughter doing "work placement" for six months, with only the vague notion there might be a real bona fide job at the end of it.
They'll be told, "no, sorry....but there is no position available for you." Then, it's "NEXT ONE, PLEASE !"

They already are and have - that's why the delivery element is increasing. In 2000 some deliveries were 2.5 hrs, now its seems the average is 4.5hrs.

In deliveries it will be a long time before we are replaced by machine - as above they will just keep increasing the outdoor element.

If you are on a casual, temporary or a Fixed term contract, then yes you are probably more vulnerable than most. If however you are on a permanent Full time or permanent Part Time then unless Royal Mail ignore the "No compulsory redundancies" agreement with the Union you are probably ok.

As above. To be honest in the 8 years I have been with Royal Mail they have always had plenty of volunteers for early retirement or redundancy and I can't see that changing anytime soon.

But that's because the terms for EVR have been very generous. Who wouldn't take 30 grand not to come to work any more?
When that goes.....the volunteers will dry up as well.

the new proposals the goverment are proposing is cutting the redundancy packages to 20 weeks only statutory minimum

but companies can still do more generous terms if they wish
