Hi
I was involved in a RTA 12 weeks ago, in which I sustained neck, shoulder and upper back injuries, I find it very hard to sleep and cant lie on my left side, if I do the pain wakes me up, in the past 5 or 6 days I've had tingling and numbness in my left thumb and last night the tingling and numbness has spread to my left index finger, I take Tramadol. Does anyone know why these symptoms should appear this long after the accident?
Regards

Re: RTA question
being involved in a RTA is the key symptom on this
did you go to hospital is my first question
the tingling you are feeling is a classic symptom of nerve damage, more important you could have lumbar problems, slipped disc etc. the central nervous system (nerves) eminate from the spinal cord
please see your doctor for piece of mind and dont delay, its better safe than sorry

Re: RTA question
Hi
Thanks for your replies, Ive been to hospital 3 times and get physio every week and seen my GP 7 or 8 times since the crash, I rang my GP's and told them about my thumb and the only appointment I can get is Thursday. Ive had a look on the web but cant find anything about time frames.
I just thought it was odd after all the time.
Thanks again

Re: RTA question
Phil's right ask a doctor.
If it is really worrying you get an emergency appointment.
We are posties and it's best if we leave the doctoring to the doctors...alternatively you could ask a line manager,i think they all went to medical school.

I take your point, I just thought it was odd after 12 weeks but thanks anyway.

Re: RTA question
phros - Ask your physio to do a spinal examination.
Had same problem after a fall, ended up damaging my shoulder. They thought originally, as the xray showed, it was just calcification. Then the pins n needles started. Physio pressed on one bit of my spine and pins n needles appeared as soon as she touched it. This can be treated with a nerve blocker such as amitryptiline, but u need to get diagnosed first :)

Re: RTA question
Sounds like one of my problems after pulling my back trying to get a york out of the back of a van.
If you're suffering in your fingers, it's likely a nerve trapped in your neck (luckily I had some good physios). When it's happening, pull your chin back toward your throat and straighten your neck, this opens up the gaps between the cervical vertebrae and should stop the pinching. If the sensation starts to fade, you know what the problem is ;)

Re: RTA question
fingers, high up in the spine, whole of hand and up the arm, usually slightly lower than the neck. Never managed to free mine, but the drugs are wonderful
