With us using these light weight trolleys, are we not at more risk of ill health? Not just aches and pains, but with diseases from dog shite.Scenario is , we wheel these things around for a few hours, we go over dog shite, we then chuck them in the back of our vans , the wheels go onto our pouches, we then pick the pouches up, get dog shite on our hands , it could get into our eyes, etc . Im not talking feckin great wads of the stuff, just little bits that you dont notice......just a thaught, when you are eating a buttie or cake in the van, if you have time of course....just a thaught..

No I think the risk is the same as not covering your toothbrush after use if you have a toilet in your bathroom.

According to scientists at England University of Manchester, there are more than one hundred million bacteria living in your uncovered toothbrush, including staphylococci which causes skin rashes and E. coli which causes diarrhea.


However, I intend to take precautions against dog faeces, and other contaminant's, anyway.

So you're quite happy to touch gates, bannisters, letterbox flaps, latches, door bells/knockers, mail items which have been through many unwashed hands, dirty van doors/keys, a LWT handle which is used day in day out without being cleaned and even your never had a wash in its life PDA but it's only the potential of unseen dog faeces from your wheel which worries you when eating your buttie or cake in the van.

which means returning to office to use facilities that mgmt take for granted.
you should not be having meal breaks in vans especially p/l shared vans
return to office dont give them any more short cuts
you are entitled to your full break in one go ie 40 mins half way through your working day
not at the end.
do you think your mngmt have their breaks in the street no way and why should you .
rm must supply you with wash / eating premises facilities by law
do not let them get away with their responsibility and duty of care to you.
old argument in our office was if you cannot complete delivery we will make you take your break . oh what a scary threat i take 20 min before deliv then another 20 half way round deliv
finish bang on or leave mail in pisses them right off.
use everything and take everything you are entitled to because if you dont they expect and will do away with employee benefits .

The problem with dog faeces is that you only need a microscopic amount to spread diseases like Campylobacter infection and Salmonella.
You may not even see or smell any until it's too late.
If you are dumping a trolley in the back of the van on top of bags of mail the whole lot could be compromised and you won't know about it until you are driving the porcelain bus.

It's a possibility to contract that disease from anything, (lets say for the sake of argument the gate latch from the dog owner who got a little bit on them after scooping the poop earlier in the day)

An increase in risk due to a change in working practices which were not adequately risk assessed could be though.

I have posted about this before and there has never been an adequate response from anyone. If trials were carried out then what was the approved remedy? It isn't just a question of getting it on your hands but on your clothes and the pouch you are about to put on your back. The only response I have ever had was "try to avoid it" but nothing to suggest what you do if you haven't managed to avoid it.

In my office, they always say my van is full of baby wipes, hand wash etc, I dont want to get peoples germs, especially the really stinky ones, if you know what I mean, not just the aminals, sometimes they are cleaner , RM have certain responsiblities, but its up to you to take certain responsibilies, we are adults
