Postal deliveries on Saturdays could be scrapped under the controversial ConDem plans to sell the Royal Mail.
Business Secretary Vince Cable would allow the company to offer a five-day service, with laws for the privatisation expected to be brought in next month.
He has pledged to keep universal pricing so the cost of a letter will be the same anywhere in the UK.
But sources close to the Government say they can offer "no guarantee" a six-day service will stay.

Yes for social/family reasons. For example with family 200miles away going to see them for the weekend is hardly worth it when setting off Sat afternoon to be back for Monday. At the same time though it means there will be no more days off during the week which is a downer because you can do a lot with them.
As for protecting jobs: the union are all over the place on this. On one hand they want to facilitate modernisation and accept without question TENS of thousands of job cuts at mail centres but when faced with job cuts for efficiency sake by ending Sat deliveries they are against it. Totally inconsistent.
If the profit in the mail delivery market it too tight to support Sat deliveries then it's madness not to end them. If Saturday is a 'loss' day for the company then all the work we do Mon-Fri subsidises it. Why should we subsidise 20,000 jobs? (estimate) If that's what you want then why don't we take on 50,000 more staff and subsidise them too. Any opinions on that welcome. Cheers.

No...because after Saturday....the attack on the USO will continue and eventually we will have a 3 day a week part-time delivery service to the "unprofitable" parts of the country.

Sorry it's a no from me to,sounds great and i hate saturday's on delivery but i do worry that if they did Monday to Friday deliverys then there would be staff losses,we have to look to protecting services and staffs jobs.
It's a no from me too, losing Saturday (one of the busiest days of the week) would only start the inevitable destruction of the USO - imagine those rural areas only getting a delivery once a week, call me a pessimist but I just think of myself as experienced.

I think that whether its a Yes or No from the workers is a neither here nor there.
The Con-Dem's have taken the decision to cut the USO from 6 to 5 days,and grabbing our pension assets too - its the only way they can get a buyer to be interested.
So instead of worrying about what we cannot change, start dreaming about what you can spend your share money on
Voted yes for completely personal reasons, sick and tired of getting home after 2pm on a Sat utterly knackered and asleep on the couch by 9pm..another weekend ruined... I know that some job losses would happen but we have lost over 60,000 in 7 years and more on the agenda as things are going !!! I think the mon-fri week will tip the balance if(when) the CWU hold a ballot. Obviously Im not a fan of privitisation but I am increasingly giving up on any other option, as one way or another it is going to happen
