Newish Postie - Atos

Post by cgs333 »

Hi all

I have worked for RM for 6 weeks now as a part time OPG (24 hrs a week).
I am suffering with Shin Splints which has been caused by the walking/cycling. I'm sure i'm not the only postie who has suffered with this. My doctor told me to take a day off (yesterday) - today was my day off, I went in this morning with my Sick note stating that I must do light duties for a week so I can heal.
This was agreed and told me not to worry about my job, its fine - now I have just had a phone call from them asking for by DOB for Atos.
Should I be worried? - I cannot loose this job, and surely as its a work related injury there isn't much they can do?
Your advise would be good :nervous

I have suffered with shin splints before so I know where you are coming from.

Try this before you go out on delivery, it does help even though you might not think it does.

stand on the edge of a kerb with your heels etc hanging over it, then stretch your calfs by rocking backwards for 5 - 10 seconds at a time, this will stretch your muscles and stop them pulling soo much thus causing your shin splints, also start your walk a bit slower to get your leg muscles warmed up a bit slower, I even found that taking iboprofen 20 minutes before I started helped with lessening the swellings etc.

you do get better overtime though, but it will take a while for your legs to come accustomed to the extra work you are putting them though.

I hope this helps you out and I assure you it will help to alliviate your problem.

Depends on how ATOS handle it as to whether you should be worried or not, and of course how your local management does as well. In most cases they might actually help by backing up what your Doc says.

Shin splints are painful but stretching exercise can help prevent them. http://www.active.com/running/Articles/ ... n-Tips.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

ATOS were excellent when I had to speak to them last winter during a spell of illness. I'd never had to deal with anyone like this before and was very nervous about the whole thing, but they were nothing but sympathetic and helpful.
Good luck with the sore legs :)

1 day off, you can self certify for seven !

Some Lino is being a bit keen referring you to ATOS after a single day off, if they request a face to face interview make sure you go in RM time, not your own.
