Van driving query

Today i was asked by my manager to bring my driving license next and started to check if i could drive the post vans - does that mean i have officially been given the offer to drive a van instead of my car or are they just trying to check my license?

Also what do RM vans do - simple as it may sound - i mean, do i just do my regualar walks or do i have to be sharing the van or some sort???

Ive only been in this job for about 2/3 months...and i do drive for my walks anyway!

They're meant to check your licence every 6 months (that's how it used to be anyway, I don't think it's changed), then they asked us to sign a form to give them permission to check our details with the DVLA... It's just if you're going to drive for them on the off chance, they have to show that they've checked your licence.

We've been told we have to show our DL and sign some form or another if we wish to use private cars on del..

If you've got P&L coming should you not be getting a test in a van to check your ability? (changeover as it's sometimes known) (as well as DL check) -certainly happened in our office.

yeh for insurance reasons you'd need a changeover to drive the vans

driving license checks are done regardless of whether you use private or rm vechile

answering an earlier question: i use my car to deliver because my round is 4 miles away :O

and to the later answers: so i guess i'm not going to drive a van anytime soon then :( And do i have to put the van in my own insurance if i was to ever drive RM vans?(If thats the case then i'll never drive it then cause i'm only 18 and prices are like thousands just for my car...eeekk :'(

2 posties work together doing 2 duties, you take everything out inc large parcels and SD's
only works well if your oppo walks at the same speed, otherwise 1 of you can end up sat waiting.
obviously 1 must be able to drive the van, better if both.

they should still have a driver to take you out and have bag drops

you have to do a test before you can drive a van, and no, you dont pay for insurance in their vans, and which i'm guessing that you are currently driving your car without valid insurance too.

Karchun - if you are using your own car you have to make sure you have the correct insurance. If you only have basic Comprehensive or 3rd Party Fire and Theft then you are not covered for delivering mail from it, in fact in most cases you won't even be covered for your journey out to your first delivery point if you have mail in the car with you.

Possible consequences of not having the right insurance:

Police spotting you are a Postie could stop you, find out you don't have the correct insurance and seize your car.

If you have an accident whilst driving your car for work you won't be covered at all. Royal Mails bond AFAIK only covers the mail and the 3rd party vehicle, without the right insurance your own vehicle, you and any passengers will not be covered and you will have to reimburse all costs including any lost working days that RM would normally claim from your insurance company.

I am uncertain about this --- but if you don't have the correct insurance the RM Bond may be invalidated and you won't be covered at all.

When it suits them that is - we've got new starters driving vans from day one or being told use their own cars, and this a P&L office.

My only advice is stop using your car. If the manager makes a fuss tell him you cannot afford business insurance, if he says you are insured under RMs blanket tell him you want to be insured comprehensive not 3rd party only......

And do i have to make my insurance a business insurance cause i only work part time - 1 day only! (Because i am so young, my insurance costs £2k already and this insurance company is gps tagged from 11pm to 5am - im not sure whether they'll even let me insure business??
