Do you have to give your name if asked for by a person receiving mail? Yup, this would be for the person to make a complaint!

I was always told when I worked at a call centre that I didn't have to give my FULL name out. So I only ever gave out my first name and then my extension number (we had our own that went with us regardless of where we sat in the call centre).

So, I would say that you don't HAVE to give your full name, but in order to be identified, I'd suggest first name and duty number? I'd certainly say you don't have to give your full name. I wouldn't. None of their business and if the manager gives it out, it's a breach of data protection.

Oh and the ID badge only has the first name on the reverse side...

Thanks all! had a customer shouting the odds thinking that 3 rings and 7/8 minutes isn't long enough to come to the door. Anyway demanded to know my name for a "I'll get you the sack!" complaint. Complaint said that the postman "REFUSED to give his name which is totally unacceptable"

I've always been of the opinion that RM know who's on the walk on what days so where the problem?

Never been asked for ID on the street in all the years I've been with RM. Others have been stopped randomly(????) by IB and asked for ID, where are your specials etc.

Had someone shouting abuse at me once for posting D2D's when he had a "no junk mail" sticker in his window, tried to explain that regardless i had to post them etc, he got right up tight and stuff demanding my name ended up telling him my name was joe.... joe bloggs then walked off before while he's still shouting at me down the street.

As far as I'm concerned, it's my decision as to whether I give anybody my name.

Sometimes if you get a friendly old lady wanting to say hello and asks my name, I'm more than happy to oblige, but if an aggresive chap/lady ever demanded they can get stuffed.

O.K so the other obvious question would be can you get into trouble for giving a wrong/made-up name? Sometimes it the only thing that will get a person off your back.

Your ID card has an ID number on it which you can give them, like the old badge numbers.

You can change your name as often as you like as long as its not for an illegal purpose - so make one up.

Unfortunately, using a made up name can only exacerbate the situation later on. It's easier for all concerned to just give first name and duty number and move on. That way they're getting the "name" they're after, and when the complaint makes it's way down the system, there's no danger of the right name slipping out, the customer then getting irate about being lied to and then you being accused of being dishonest (which will then more than likely lead them to accuse you of being dishonest about other stuff).

When I worked at the call centre, I had some guy ranting and raving on the phone, I managed to get him calmed down. Then he asked for my name so I gave him my first name and extension number as I always do. He demanded to know my surname, and I then explained that I never give my surname out. (Having previously been in an abusive relationship and recently moved to the area under advice from the Police to get away from the ex, I was still a little paranoid about it.) This guy then went off his nut again and then started demanding to speak to a supervisor because I wouldn't give him my surname, even though my extension number was specific to me and I'd made notes on the file which meant I could be identified. Anyway, he still didn't get what he wanted (because he was being an unreasonable tw*t) and he didn't get my surname either.

Bloke who called in to collect what turned out to be a Home Delivery Network parcel

got a bit lippy last Xmas, and my buddy unfortunately made a remark to me that the customer overheard. 'I want your name, I'll have you sacked blah blah' says the bloke. Seemed quite taken aback when he got the name he asked for and wrote it down.

Never did find out if the acting DIM got a phone call complaining about Dan Gleeballs

As there was no follow-up investigation, I'm guessing not !
