in our office. A guy parked his van at a shop and went in for the paper. Next morning he was hauled before the DOM and threatened with conduct code as he left the PDA in the front of the van in its cradle.

And the problem is what?
In the security rules it says that the PDA goes with you or is locked in the back of the van, it's never to be left in the cradle.

Our PDA's are getting worse and worse. Guess they are like a phone when it comes to the battery and constant charging damages their lifespan. Only takes about 2 hours and its down to 20% and warning me about battery too low. Surely the charger could have been fitted in the glove box then you could hide it away but still charge it. Seems stupid having the charger on full display in the van but we cant leave it too charge unless we are in van.

The PDA won't charge unless the engine is running..............and you have to then be in the van

Tis true... I did all the training and this was mentioned specifically, several times. Not to be left on view in the van, to be locked in the back if not in use.

The PDA won't charge unless the engine is running..............and you have to then be in the van

my bipper charges the pda without engine running

left my PDA in my bipper all last night and it was fully charged this morning

You still have cradles. Ours were all broken within a week

Stuff a mail bag behind the seats, if it happens to cover the cradle when youre nipping to gregs who can help it.

Security of the PDA device in vehicles
· The PDA device must be returned to the re-charging cradle in the vehicle after each delivery or collection. This secure position restricts the movement of the device, avoids the driver from being distracted and prevents the device from being damaged. It also ensures the device is being re-charged and transmitting data.

· Never leave the PDA device loose on the seats or the dashboard. This will distract you and you may be liable for prosecution under the Road Safety Act 2006.

· If a PDA device is not needed for a delivery point, when leaving the vehicle the PDA device must be placed in the glove-box compartment or retained upon the person. Ensure that the vehicle is locked with the vehicle alarm and immobiliser set where fitted. When the driver returns to the vehicle the device must be fastened back into the re charging cradle. The device is not to be left in the vehicle including the glove-box compartment at the end of the duty.

We finish after our office has shut, which closes about 2.30 pm.
We have to take the battery out and take the pda home as dont want to leave it in the van because posties use it for other work related things before we go out at 10.30am
One question I would like to ask is that we are in a crap signal area and our scanned items dont download and you can have say 20 items that cant be sent and when you try to log off it wont download the items.
If it cant download the scanned items what do you do as you cant take the battery out?

Just let it go flat,on park and loop you cannot put any charge into the thing as you only drive a couple of minutes between loops,give us the right tools for the job ffs

why do you have to take battery out

if you let it go down to zero it doesn't fully charge before you start the next days delivery.
By taking the battery out it at least keeps some of the charge
