Should Firms deliveries be allowed home hours early at xmas

I would like to find out if this happens just in my office.

We all know that firm based deliveries do not get hit with the same level of mail and packets than a residential delivery. Next week in my office the firms will finish typically finish 2-3 hours before the residential walks. This is partly helped by the fact they will not have to perform any ips sorting.

The dom will then let them go home leaving behind york’s of parcels and un-sorted mail. I have to say I do think its unfair as they will be getting the same 22 hours OT as the walkers out on delivery.

It happens every year and we get cross that it seems unfair but the Dom refuses to balance the work load fairer.

So my question is this: Are your firms given any extra work over Xmas to balance things out ?

It tends to be a local agreement. My office does not get it either.

However, to the original question, our Firms have to deliver packets anyway as part of their normal work, not just at Christmas, so they are getting the Christmas effect just as walkers do.

For your office though it does seem unfair though, and certainly not in the spirit of fair and manageable workload, or working all paid hours. But how far would you want to push it.....

We book extended here. Some of the big walks have claimed 14 hours already so it may work out better for us, it may not. To be honest previous management here was not trusted enough to have a flat payment as they would probably enforce the "pressed" overtime to the detriment of members. I don't think anyone has even thought of changing it.

We only have one firms delivery and it is a total joke all year round, not just at christmas. It takes an hour at most to deliver and does no IPS. It also gets the least amount of mail in the entire office because business mail has droped off so much. Yesterday he was moaning about how many packets he had and it was not even half a york, meanwhile I had three full yorks of large packets plus all the other crap on my walk.

Yep,I book overtime or cut off, as my SA only takes me up to a certain time.

LOL, going on my typical delivery span this last week, a flat 22hrs payment would not cover my duty for the next two weeks. Glad I have the option to claim what I do!

our firms driver does residential packets and conveying bags to posties and transporting them back to the office so how can he go home early?

Ours are like it as well,they come in do abit go out spend the rest of the day saying how hard it is on a Firms Delivery and then go home 2hrs early,i offered one of the chap's my delivery which is on a bike with 600+delivery points at which point he left never to be seen again!

From reading stuff on here there must be plenty of offices who still have job and finish. Are there plans to introduce it to all delivery offices or has that been stopped now?

Sorry i should have been a bit clearer.

Our office has a local Xmas agreement whereupon you are paid 22 hours SA aver the 2 weeks pressure. The idea is that you stay and finish the workload which the dom considers fair. If you use your own car and do not rely on bags being dropped off its possible that you can make a little time each day. The hours are paid one in the morning (5am start) and one at the end. If you go over the hour at the end you will get the extra on top but you are EXPECTED to stay out and complete NO MATTER what. (which is one of the reasons ive opted out)

Ok back to the firms.

The Firms in my office normally go out and deliver the firms (no surprise there) and then do overweight parcels. In general they will expect to finish 30-40 mins before a walking delivery (unless you use your car).
However over the xmas pressure (with the annual leave cancelled) we have extra bodies and extra hire vans. These guys take over the over weight parcels that we throw out.

So the firms just deliver the firms and then go home. They do not help on the IPS so are normally waiting to bundle up as soon as we finish the sorting. They get out a good hour before any walker and without the parcels even with xmas pressure they finish around 11am to midday.

This causes bad feelings around the office with some posties having to stay out till 4pm to finish their rounds. Also the firms drivers tend to take a long coffee break whilst we finish the IPS which also winds a lot of people up.

We have brought this up many times with the dom but it runs like this. If she makes the firms work their hours and deliver packets after their deliveries then she would lose the hire vans which are handy. The extra bodies could also be sent to other offices to cover sickness. Finally the firms vans are offered to postie’s who are brave enough to cover any unexpected delivery overtime which pops up. So she is not prepared to do anything about the situation.

So there is the rub and I know that it will all start to kick off by midweek and the bad feelings will flow.
