Individual payment by results schemes

Most individual payment by results schemes are based on performance ratings, generally using the British Standard Institution formulae(9) on which:
•75 performance equates with a normal (ie: non-incentive) level, such as a worker receiving time rates could expect to achieve
•100 performance equates with a standard level such as a qualified worker receiving payment by results could expect to achieve.

Where the basis of the scheme is to pay for increased productivity (the ratio of output to input), the following calculation is used to express the percentage performance achieved:

(standard minutes produced (output) x 100) / actual time taken (input)

For example, where the standard time to produce an item is 5 minutes and the working day is 8 hours (480 minutes) and the worker produces 80 units, the rating would be calculated as:

(output (80 units x 5 minutes per unit) 400 x 100) / input (8 hours x 60 minutes) 480 = 83.3

If the worker produced 120 units the performance rating would be:

600 / 480 x 100 = 125

In plain English if I understand it correct....

A non incentivised worker eg paid at hourly rate for an unmeasured piece of work so no matter how many houses you deliver to or how much mail you sort we all get the same money you would expect them to work at 75 BSI

Someone whos pay is directly related to results could reasonably be expected to work at 100 BSI as they are incentivised ie more you do..more you earn.

I wonder which catagory postman are in?

I suppose you could say that the day we lost job and finish we all started to work at 75 BSI with all the 'lump sums' in the world you will not get a pint into a quart pot....or what ever that saying is. Perhaps someone ought to send this to Higson and co.

Basically anything beyond 75BSI anywhere in British Industry is paid extra for as it is performance related pay - like strawberry pickers being paid per bucket picked? That makes sense because the employer gets paid per KG too so every extra bucket above what is expected is extra income.

But we won't be paid extra for working above 75BSI. So to expect us to work above 75BSI with no extra reward is unreasonable because it is above and beyond the call of duty and the employer will be getting all the benifit and we wont get a penny?
