Buddy Trays, what's the point?

Cuts down on the number of trays required over christmas, where two walks are put in a single tray, or three. CSS machines will cut down on that this year.

We get these now. Wouldn't be such a bad idea if the post for the two rounds wasn't all mixed together. If they put one walks post on top of the other it would make more sense?

rather than a tray sorted per walk its sorted for 3 'buddys'
it makes no sense
we used to get a tray per walk
then 2 walks(sorta makes sense for P&L)
now its 3
soon it will be a row then they will just go back to manual
mind you its a win when you have an early starter who does the trays fo the other 2

Saves space in the back of the lorries when transporting the work to delivery offices. We used to get some trays sent to us with just a couple of letters in them, thats a lot of wasted space so putting them together cuts down on lorry trips!

But the mail is dropping off, so there should be loads of space on lorries

Buddy trays screw time out of the IPS.
They should disappear with sequencing but lo and behold - they aren't sequencing all the mail. Consequently there is no need to change start times. No need to have a walk sequenced revision. No need to pay out £800/head (pro rata)
This is the new relationship.

We've started to get trays with 4 walks together, and not segregated well with say ten letters for walk1 then ten for walk2 then some more for walk1 again

I don't think you understand how buddy sorting works. They do not sort the letters/flats to each individual walk and then mix them into one tray, the have a single selection on the machine for those walks. Let me give you a simple example: say the MC serves DOs with 1000 walks and the machine has 200 selections, this would require 5 different walksorting plans to be run on the machine. If instead the mail was buddy sorted with five walks to a selection they would only require one plan. This saves time in the MC switching the machines between plans and clearing down each time.

In which case it's just a completely naff way of doing it with no better alternative method available and really it would be better off completely scrapped!
