A SONG FOR EUROPE
"Plus ça change (plus c’est la même chose)" – a French saying used by the English which, roughly translated, means “the more things change, the more things stay the same” - and so it is with Europe.
It certainly feels that way with the Tory MPs who voted for a referendum. The issue of Europe seems
to stiffen the sinews of at least 80 mainly Government supporting MPs. The overwhelming majority of the media,
particularly the press, are only too willing to tell some fanciful story of alleged“Brussels madness.”
Recently, the CWU took part in a UNI Europa Conference in Toulouse, France. The event was held to discuss all manner of policies designed to make for a people’s Europe. Listening to workers from Greece explaining their problems was sobering. The CWU also speaks at the ETUC level.
How crucial our engagement with Europe is can be judged by the importance of what is decided at that level. The EU Commissioners, for instance, have yet to clear state aid for Royal Mail.
If achieved, this will enable the settling of the historic pension fund deficit - a problem that has plagued Royal Mail for many years.
It can also be judged by our success in ensuring the implementation of the Agency Workers Directive - an achievement which stemmed from our engagement with the TUC, the last Labour Government and the tremendous
pressure exerted by the CWU at all levels. The importance of this hard-won piece of legislation was demonstrated by the Prime Minister taking eleventh hour legal advice in a failed attempt to derail its implementation.
As it is, we're already witnessing major employers trying to undermine it. The ballyhoo over Europe comes down to these questions:

Is that the guy who stood up in London at the meeting called for reps trying to push a yes vote a while ago ?, the same guy who in his first breath slagged off the Granny Smith serial and told us to forget trying to get a five day working week Monday to Friday?.
If it was then then there is a guy wayyyy out of touch with the rank and file members.
