I've been at Royal mail for around 9 months now, on either 3 month contracts or my last one was a 5 month contract. I'm just wondering how long it is likely to be before I get offered a permanent contract? I've read the maximum is 4 years?! Could it really take that long?
Someone in my office told me they had been part time for nine years. Seriously if you want to buy a house or anything like this, then working for the RM is the wrong job to be in. There is just no stability with these crappy rolling contracts, and it is so hit and miss about getting FT positions. This is exactly why I am looking for another job that is FT and more stable, so for me this job is a good stop gap until I find a FT one.

there is a difference between part time and a permanent contract though - I think the original poster is asking if he'll be on a temporary rolling contract for a long time.
He isn't asking when he'll be full time, just when he'll no longer be temporary.
I was lucky, I seem to have joined at the time when I was offered a part time permanent contract - I know it's not full time, but it does give a little more security than the rolling contracts being handed out these days.

I am still Temp after 2 years and 7 months. Only just been made up from 25hrs to 33 3/4hrs but still only Temp.

At this point in time, i'm not too bothered about full time opportunities. I'd just like a bit more job security with a permanent contract. Guess i'll have to wait four years tho :/

I think the OP realises that - his problem is not that he wants a Full Time time contract but wants to come off a "Fixed Term" contract into an open ended permanent contract.
TBH I think that the terminology involved is confusing things, a Fixed Term Contract is usually a contract that has a start and finish date. Where as a Permanent contract has a start date but no end date, as does some Temporary Contracts, the difference is usually spelled out in the contract. All three can be full time or part time, or even flexi, shared etc.

Various Regions are doing different things in realisation to whether they recruit new starters on a permanent contract or a fixed term contract. If someone is recurited on a fixed term contract then the law states that if an individual has a continuous contract for 4 years then they will automatically become permanent. However under MTSF it does states that those fixed term contracts who have been on a continuous fixed term contract for over 2 years can be made permanent depending on the resoucung circumstances.
London Branch's agreed that no revisions would.be implemented unless those fixed term contracts with more than 2 years service get a permanent contract. London has now achieved an agreement with Royal Mail which means that 132 fixed term contracts who had 2 years or more service on 1st September 2011 will be guaranteed a permeant contract once integrated revision has been deployed. In the last 3 weeks over 20 fixed term contract staff in London have now been given permanent contracts.
For a union which gets it's share of stick , this is a massive result for those fixed term contracts who without the union making a stance would have had their contracts terminated before the 4th year.
It's down to each office, branch and division to argue for fixed term contracts to be made permanent. Sadly some people over look this situation. In London we were fed up waiting for CWU HQs to resolve the FTC issue. So we decided to put pressure on Royal Mail by not agreeing to revisions until they agreed to make permanent those FTCs who had done over 2 years. They then deicded to reach an agreement with us in London.
