non driver

Post by mentaltheshots »

in my office we have been told that the only non driver (never took a test) will be given a round with a driver. The round has already been allocated. The non driver is very low on the seniority list which means he will jump ahead in the list. Is this allowed?

What's the alternative?
Enforce seniority rules? Then he's out of a job.
If everyone else can drive and he is the one person in the office who cannot, then I'd turn a blind eye to 'rules'. :angel

sort of allowed, basically if he is a non driver and no non driver vacancies for him when his turn to sign, the least senior driver who is in the passenger seat so to speak should be moved

when you say non driver (never took a test) do you mean he does not hold a driving license or does not drive for rm but does, as if he does have a driving license then depending on whats on his contract could matter as if it says part of his duties include driving he could be made to take a driving duty

He has no licence. basically one duty has been put aside consisting of a van driver (park and loop, two in a van thing) and him. that duty only one person can sign for, which means he is jumping seniority as he already has a duty before the resign starts.

Depending on the size of your office i would of thought it could be worked out without just giving him a duty tbf.

How?
You either allocate him a duty  or you offer him the pick of every potential non-driving duty in the office which will go down well :left: or you make him a rather pointless reserve  or you try to offload him. :no no
What other options are open to RM?

i can see your point but the other way to look at it is he is getting no choice what so ever in his duty,

one point though, going by what you've told us, why is that even happening, if every other member of staff are drivers then doesnt matter what duty he eventually gets as all vans are going to have a driver in them anyway, should just be a matter of telling the other guy your going to be the driver every day

What do you mean how,it's one bod,it aint hard, unless he's seriously down the bottom of the seniority list which would bring in the pointless reserve thing which is fair enough tbh.

Mental also hasn't given enough details as well tbf.

Is the whole office P&L,how big is the office.

I'm only pointing out that there could be other options depending on the answers to the questions i have asked.

Don't go all defensive on me Susan. :left:
I'm only pointing out that he has to go somewhere...not driving...and if you let normal seniority run it's course there might not be a somewhere(depending as you say on the office/details) in which case you have to bump someone which is worse in my opinion than just allocating him a non-driving duty in the first place.

I may be missing something here but if everyone else drives then can't he still be a reserve in the P&L duties and HCT ones. If he covers a sick driver, then the other driver in the pairing does the drivers tasks.

Now if it was 2 or more non drivers then yes there could be a problem, but with occasional driving now in the contract when you start its unlikely that a new postie won't be able to drive so if you only have 1 non driver now that's all you are ever likely to have.

confused from yorkshire needs clarification

thats what was I was thinking-we got loads of non drivers and unfortunately for me most are above me in the FT seniority and most drivers are below me in the FT seniority so I will end up back down to a reserve and those below me will get a pick up of 4 or 5 duties yet I have worked at least 4 years longer than some of them. Its a funny old world Saint!

I was more generalising than being specific.
I agree with you i don't think it's an issue in this particular office.
I do think it will be an issue in a lot of offices.
