Strangely, ask most people outside RM if they would go in to their job before their start time, thus working 'for free', and they'd reply "HELL, NO!"

True, and I agree that it should be BANNED, but Mangers love it. And to be honest if they come in two hours early and they go home home two hours early I don't see the problem, it's the same length of working day. It's just psychological, it demoralises every one else when they see them leaving early. The problems that do arise are when the "Early Birds" are chasing others (that start on time) for their bags! Or shirking their job in other ways i.e not doing IPS, or not doing bag drops because the bags aren't ready. Love it though when they've bagged up are just ready to shoot out the door and a late Truck arrives with more mail! What a Bastard eh!

Just occurred to me. If they have an 'accident on duty' in those times when they weren't actually officially on duty, would they be covered, insurance-wise ? And could any time off sick then come back to haunt them at a Stage 3 ?

The manager who kept complaining I was cutting off said that the floater finishes in time on your day off, to which I replied "will you pay me an hours overtime to come in when he starts"

I thought we had done the insurance thing to death before on the site. The minute you enter the premises you and RM become jointly responsible for you H&S. Same as if a burglar crawls across a roof and falls through and injures himself. If there was no warnings indicating that the roof was fragile the burglar can sue the building owner. Go figure. British H&S Law. Check out Brother Magrew for all the rulings on this sort of thing.

The whole insurance thing is never as clear cut as you think.
Of course RM's insurers would argue that you shouldn't have been there in the first place...that's what lawyers do.
They argue percentage liability and then make an offer based on that...they never admit 100% liability.
If you don't think that coming in early will affect that offer you're very gullible.
