My driver on P/L has been told to bring a full written Birth Certificate in today to prove he is a British Citizen which he is .
He told the manager he only has the short version Certificate and the DIM said that was no good, doesnt have a passport either.
But the stupid thing is that he has been working for Royal Mail for 19 YEARS

Goes a bit further back than that...but not 19 years.

The files are incomplete because between 1997 and 2004 there was an ambiguity in the Home Office guidelines about performing and recording identity and proof of right to work checks.In 2004 the Home Office provided guidance which clarified what documents were acceptable to cover these requirements and how they should be recorded. RMG has a legal obligation to collect this information.

Had same problem with my last employer, I was a day from suspension before bringing in a new birth cert. The short one I handed in 6 months prior was deemed no good and my passport was expired.

In RMs defence, it's a legal requirement for all employers to obtain this info and if they were to have an audit they would be heavily fined if proper records for all staff weren't in place

So a Polish person appplying for a job in the UK and having a parsport and you aplying for a job in the UK with a British birth certificate ,The Polish person would get the job,as a Birth certficate is not 100% proff of ID.

Almost a reason why you should give the goverement £80 for a passport even if you never travel abroad.

No, a short birth certificate is the issue here, it doesn't give your parents place of birth or names I believe, where as a full one does, which proves your nationality. A passport can only be applied for now with a full birth cert which is why a passport is also deemed enough evidence of nationality

I was adopted at the age of two and I only have a short certificate but still possess a British passport!

I had to show my passport again, I produced it in 2005, apparently there has been a cock up by HR. Beginning to wonder if they've lost a load of info and if they have who's got it? When I handed over my passport to the managers I let it be known how offended I was to be asked, I've traced my family tree back to 1489 all in the same county I'm living in now and its a f***ing cheek I'm being asked to prove my nationality!

I'm guessing you applied for the passport a few years ago before the rules changed

You can renew a passport without needing to produce a birth cert again, but to order your FIRST passport you need a full birth cert

But what if I hadn't already got a passport and now wished to apply for my first one? I have no adoption papers etc, so how would that be dealt with? Also how could I prove to RM who I was?
