Cutting Off on Delivery Only Duties?

Post by Dorset Plodder »

Our DIM has just returned from his latest Motivation Course (meeting with the Area Manager), an old tactic has reared it's ugly head again! He's obviously had a chat with his fellow cronies around the coffee machine. He's telling everyone he's not going to pay OT for people taking longer than they should to cover a particular duty.

I've been searching posts on "Unpaid Overtime" but can't find anything about Delivery Only duties. I know we don't work for free! but feedback from colleagues that have been "Leaned On" to stop booking Excess, and basically GET FASTER, tend to be.."The Computer says it can be done in 4 hours and that's all you're getting paid".....when cutting off was mentioned i.e "So do you want me to phone you near the end of my contacted hours....." The DIM said..."No you're just getting paid for the time the duty should take"

Question is: Appendix 3 doesn't seem to apply... How does a PTer on Delivery Only know .."Where an employee feels that on completion of preparation he/she may experience difficulty in completing his/her delivery within the authorised time allotted.." There's only a single (normally overweight) bag on the frame and the remaining Gods knows how many bags are already on their way out to the bag drops.

Any successful tactics that have been used to counter this very blunt attempt by management to get New, Inexperienced colleagues to work for nothing would be very much appreciated. Take it as read that the Local Rep will be brought on board.

thats a bloody good question
so all your mail is tied up and gone bar your red bag when you come in?
well its one for the experts
to me it seems all you cn do is make your manager aware you are unable to work over and as such you need them to make arrangements in case you are unable to complete
obviously you cant tell from the mail
also im betting you dont have a mobile on you either either(nudge, nudge)

If a manager is asking you to work blind he must accept that he may get something back.
Whether that is through a phone call or meeting you at your finishing time would need to be agreed beforehand.
You need to get your union rep to put in place local guidelines for this as there is nothing national that covers it.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Cheers FT. That makes sense to me..what a surprise eh! RM even manage to shoot themselves in the foot when they're trying to shaft their workforce! :left: I have a feeling it's just his regular "Sabre Rattling" that he does every time his Boss has told him, "Sort it out or else.." :cuppa

Agree with you pokos, but be honest that's probably what caused the "Lecture" in the first place. The more experienced Posties go at a steady speed, And Do The Job Properly, and I believe the advice given by RM to deal with the hot weather was to "pace yourselves"! The problem arises when you get a batch of new guys turn up who are keen to impress and don't realise they're not likely to get a FT duty out of RM even if they do run around. They make the older/experienced guys "Look" slower by comparison! Then you start to get the old "So and So can deliver that duty within time". :no no

Union Rep is on board and will have to chat to DIM next week ref: Either Pay the OT or We'll cut Off! :Applause It's only a Temp PT problem at moment, so in a way it's not seen as a Major problem for the rest (FT) of the office, However we really need to stick together. Problem I can foresee is there's enough Brown Nosers in the office to pick up the extra OT caused by this tactic and I hope my colleagues have enough bottle to stick at it for a while, just to make a point! :hmmmm

I'm glad your depot rep is prepared to help out a temporary PT get paid for the amount of hours they are happy to put in each day (hopefully including all addition meal relief for going past 5/7/9 hours if the PT is happy to work over contract hours).

Hopefully the "normally overweight" first bag issue is going to be addressed too?

"Problem I can foresee is there's enough Brown Nosers in the office to pick up the extra OT caused by this tactic." Surely as long as all posties are getting paid for all the o/t they want to do, everything is fine? By needing o/t to get the depot clear, this is clearly demonstrating that the office is running too lean on delivery staff and puts your rep in a stronger position to defend cuts and ought to show hours need to be added?

You're right Trolley we've been "Bleeding" FT staff, and some PT staff for years, I don't think we were one of those offices that RM were really trying to cut down the staff numbers in. However that's not stopped Management holding back on "Proper" recruitment...we've had loads of PT Temporary staff..with quite a quick turn over (which is what RM like...gone before they learn their rights!) but I believe we're still under staffed, obviously the DIM disagrees!

Rep does a reasonable job, he's no fire brand, but he's pissing up a rope when it comes to trying to get Contracts Increased. :arrrghhh We'll see what response the DIM comes out with before tackling Overweight Bags, Over sized Bundles, Over sized Packets, Late Bag Drops etc. If management choose to open the can of worms I suppose at least you can throw them in their face! :Very Happy Depends on how much s**t you want to take. :hmmmm
