CSS Operator Advice

I am thinking of applying for one of the jobs coming up in our office. Would be grateful for any advice.

Are the machines generally reliable. What happens when they fail for a lengthy period of time during the night, what sort of contingensies are there for getting the mail out to other DO's. Are the targets set by RM achievable and are there ways of easily improving performance. Any other help appreciated

The machines are usually reliable, they do break down occasionally, but there is always an engineer on call. If one machine is down (they are usually installed in pairs), depending on the length of time it is likely to be down for you can always use the other machine to complete the sequencing from both machines (work and time allowing) or just walk sort all the remaining batches. No need to worry about RM targets as long as you usually complete the work in time, management leave you alone. As for improving performance, that will come with experience.

They will try and `improve` performance by asking(kidding) you into working practices that are against H&S regulations. Because there isn`t a nationwide procedure for working these machines, you`re at the mercy of some poor managers. And dont think the Union will help either, as they`ve no script to work with either. That is your script, and if your manager asks you to do something that is not outlined in it, then you are obligated to tell him to stick it.

Oh, and did i tell you, they now lapse our duties ..... yes, when someone is off for Annual leave, they dont replace with a reserve, even tho they`re available. Tell the union, they moan to the manager, they promise it wont happen again, then they do it the week after anyway
