It's not much of a job, but it's better than walking the streets.

I have said this before and I'll say it again.

This IS the best job I have ever done. The craic with other posties is excellent, the stress levels are the lowest I have ever had (though I am pretty laid back), the rules and regulations are fairly straightforward, and the non physical side of the job is relatively easy. The physical side is probably the biggest shock for new starters but if you don't push yourself and know your limits then you should be okay.

The down side, no Corporate respect for the front line workers, managerial style that stalin would be proud off, complete lack of trust between the workers and bosses at all levels except 1st line managers, and even then the majority of them don't have people skills. The politics of CWU/Royal Mail and the disconnect which is becoming wider and wider between CWU HQ and the membership.

To boil it down to one statement - The job is excellent, it would be superb if the style of management was changed for the better. Lord Sawyer and even Sir Richard Hooper agree with me.

I would like to start by saying that I do not have a vested interest in Led Zep or any other rock band affiliation (except Faith No More, early Metalica) but please may I join this thread ?

I love the job - and yes i'm only 3 months in - and yes I have not done a winter - and yes managers are only good because i'm a newbie etc etc etc and by no means am I disrespecting the guys that have done the job in the good and bad times with good and bad managers and with and without respect from above (honestly I'm not).
However, I can only judge the job on what I see - I love it.

I worked in hotels for years doing on average 75 HOURS PER WEEK on Salary not hourly pay I also was a car salesman for 6 years and earned the same weekly wage as i am on now but doing 6 days till 7 at night over 60 hours. Stress levels sky high in both jobs

I thought both those jobs were great at first, but, as rules and conditions changed in both, I began to think that the jobs were crap..... but as newbies started , they thought the job was great, as they were not used to any other way of doing the job and just judged on what they saw.

In summary (YAWN!!) I love the job - and thanks for starting the thread.

I also love the job.....well i think it's oright at least lol.
I've been a postie for around 7 months now, and i personally think the park and loop method has made the job
a lot easier. I.E no lugging bundles out of postboxes that you use as drop off points as the vans are now used.
The only downside is the 3 month contracts, with a part time status. I can only hope that i will be made up to fulltime in the future, as i can't
live off a part time wage forever.

People are generally like sheep; if someone says it's a crap job then the others soon follow. Trouble is the old stagers have forgotten (or being lifers, never knew) that many aspects of the job are perks not rights, or rights which other workers can only dream of, so are so easily forgotten.

Why do you think similarly unskilled workers outside of RM seem to have so little sympathy for the posties' lot? That cold wind of harsh reality, again.....

Been in almost 6 years in total and best job I have ever had. I think you have to be a certain type of person to do this job or what I mean is you need to have something that keeps you into it on a daily basis. I am a bit of a loner and like getting out on my own. When I am off work I can go off for long solitary rambling walks. I am also an observer and you can sort of watch people and their environment whether it be a grand house with long gravel drive and leafy gardens or a litter strewn high rise hard boiled estate. Its all there to drink in and see. People can be kind and chatty or aloof and frosty, can complain and be abusive or need a friendly word because they are old and lonely. I can be working in beautiful rural locations untouched by modernity, or strange prefabricated post war chalets by a formidable river. People who shamble their bulky frames into offices and sit in front of computers all day never see these worlds. Top class job.

It's not the job thats crap there's a lot of positives to it, like the craic with your workmates it's regular work, overtime when you want the only thing thats crap is the idiots who call themselves managers and the ones who run the business from their ivory towers who haven't a clue whats going on at ground level and that is one thing the union should be pushing for get the top managment to go to offices up and down the country and see how their puppets are treating people, get them to try and do the job under the same conditions as us or at least shadow a postie to see we are not bullshitting them

If you are aware of what's been going on in the background for the last 10 years or so you will obviously feel that the job has deteriorated since then.
That doesn't necessarily make it a crap job...just not as good as it used to be.
If the trend continues and after privatisation i would imagine it will accelerate,then we will probably look back at today's position with misty eyes.
Crap is relative...tomorrows crap will probably be deeper and smellier.

I personally like the outdoor part of the job, just as long it's away from management then I'm quite happy (for me that's a relative term ). But it is hard to be on the go constantly for 5 hours and many people can't cope with it...............still the managers will be there to help you if you injure yourself

No,it's by no means easy but it is a good job with a decent wage and its what you make of it

It is nice to be out and delivering but the rules and management policy and too much IPS make it less enjoyable.

I would llke to be delivering by 9am every day and have more bag drops.
